South Carolina (AP) -- The state Board of Education on Wednesday rejected a state panel's proposal to change high school standards on evolution by calling on students to "critically analyze" the theory.
Science teachers had complained that although critical analysis is part of all science, the wording was really a backdoor attempt to force educators to teach religious-based alternatives. In a 10-6 vote, board members agreed.
The Education Oversight Committee, a school reform panel made up of lawmakers, teachers, parents and other community members, recommended the change last month. Panel member Senator Mike Fair, R-Greenville, has said it was intended to introduce students to challenges to evolutionary theory.
Education Superintendent Inez Tenenbaum, a Democrat, has called the effort "a ploy to confuse the issue of evolution so that ultimately evolution won't be taught."
Officials disagreed over the effect of the vote.
Education department officials say the vote leaves previous science standards adopted in 2002 in place. But Representative Bob Walker, R-Landrum, said both the Education Oversight Committee and the Board of Education must agree on new standards.

Only 25 posts to the first Catholic bash. Prolly not a record but pretty quck nontheless.
I'd rather be a right wing flying monkey that a left wing moon-bat :)
Or as I wrote a while back in response to a similar argument:
If we deny that we are created beings (a creation must have a Creator), we have no accountability and an excuse to behave badly.
This is complete and utter nonsense. Even absent a creator, we still have accountability to others in our society. Behave badly, and pretty soon you're going to get the crap kicked out of you (literally or figuratively) -- and excuses about "it's in my nature" aren't going to fly.
If kin to apes, our primal desires to murder and breed are then instinctual.
...and so are our "primal desires" for cooperation, family and community bonds, love, caring for and protecting our children, defending our peers, etc. etc.
You really haven't thought this through at all, have you?
We are without guilt and free to roam and do as we please.
Horse manure. Even *apes* feel guilt, and fail to act as hedonistically and unrestrained as you ignorantly assume they "should". Get a clue.
Even apes understand that that sort of behavior is a recipe for disaster. And humans have even more of an ability to use their minds to understand why short-term selfish gains are *not* worthwhile or desirable strategies in the long run. Instead, cooperation, mutual altruism, "golden rule" ethics, and so on are vastly more effective ways to enhance even your *own* net benefits in a society, as well as the welfare of others. It's a win-win situation.
Duh. Even *apes* figure this out pretty fast as they grow up. What's *your* excuse?
Promiscuous sex, unwanted pregnancy, abortion (murder). The decline of the family... the decline of civilization.
Uh huh. Whatever you say.
Tell me, if it were somehow proven tomorrow that there wasn't a creator after all, would *you* suddenly start raping, killing, and pillaging? Yes or no? If Yes, shame on you, and you'd better have "fun" quick before you get shot or thrown in jail. If No, then realize you're not the only one with an actual brain and a conscience.
Oz! Haven't seen you around for a while. Welcome back.
Oh, that's not what you meant? Well, I guess LouAvul wasn't comparing Christians to "Mooselimbs" either. He was remarking on the ridiculous anti-science beliefs of creationists.
Recalcitrant Computer (Maybe it believed it was just an animal)
The increase in the rate of premarital sex has nothing to do with evolution, or religion for that matter. It can be tied directly to the availability of the birth control pill. Those little pills are what opened Pandora's Box (if you'll pardon the pun).
And I want a threesome with Claudia Black and Charlize Theron. But they're not interested, so - not going to happen.
One of my half-sisters was raised in a fundamentalist church, and went to a school run by the church. She was taught science as the bible tells it. She was taught a curriculum that any YEC creationist would approve of.
She is a methamphetamine addict. She mainlines the junk. I do not expect her to be alive much longer. According to your logic, her fundamentalist Christian education is to blame. I do not agree with you.
It's only your belief in evolution that has caused you to be so twisted. No creationist would ever consider such a thing.
Belief or otherwise in evolution does not affect the Id.
Ummm, how about Lisa Randall and Ann Coulter?
(Yes, I just came from the Snarks when Bored thread on alternatives to black holes....)
Cheers!
Whiskey...Tango...Foxtrot...?
Cheers!
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is an ID'er? (Speaking of Dajjal...)
Cheers!
Moonbats of the world, unite.
OTOH, there are respectable scientists who are a bit, ummm, "odd" in their beliefs -- tho' not representative.
Kary Mullis comes to mind, as does the late Henry Eyring.
Cheers!
