"Hole discovered drilled into pipe at nuclear reactor"
Associated Press
FLORIDA CITY --
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The nuclear reactor, one of two at the Miami-Dade County power plant, had been shut down for a routine refueling, FPL spokeswoman Rachel Scott said.
The 1/8-inch hole was discovered late Thursday during a series of tests and inspections performed before bringing the unit back online, Scott said.
Other maintenance work had been performed in the area where the hole was found, Scott said.
FPL, the state's largest electric utility, repaired the damaged piping and, though the company's investigation continues, plans to bring the unit back into service in about a week, she said.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission and FBI are also conducting their own investigations.
"We want to make sure that we do a very thorough investigation and that we evaluate all possibilities," Scott said."
Yikes!
I'm going to call my father-in-law who used to be one of the guys who RAN the "Turkey" when he was a senior VP for FP&L waaaaay back in the day. He's got a Ph.d in nuclear physics, too. Have to see what this might have been about. Location is everything as they say. The snippet article doesn't specify exactly where the hole was found. But has anybody here ever started to drill a big hole by first starting a little hole, so that the bigger bit gets an easier BITE? Also, it occurs to me that a decent sized hole could be used to pack C-4 whereas C-4 wrapped around a pipe, while just as effective is also a bit more noticeable. What is going ON here? There must be local news cooperation to prevent a panic however perhaps it's already been covered and folks are just "so what" about the situation.
Me and the wife are sick and have been for a couple of weeks. It's something going around that just seems to hang on and we can't shake it. I've already lost a day without pay and so has she. No paid sick leave left, so it wouldn't surprise me if we missed this. Dang bug. You think it's almost "over" and it comes roaring back. Just a really sore throat and a bad cough. Docs can't do anything. Everybody around here has it or knows somebody who does. Thank the Lord that Spring Break starts at the end of this coming week.
Duh! Thanks for this Cindy!
