Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - Thread Thirty-Five

Posted on 03/09/2006 10:08:04 PM PST by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Unrest in Pakistan Setback for Terror War
(Full Story)

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- A week of unprecedented urban fighting in the wild tribal belt of North Waziristan has left scores dead and forced thousands to flee their homes, raising the stakes in Pakistan's war on Islamic militancy along the Afghan border.

A jumbled alliance of foreign militants, local tribesmen and Islamic students eager for jihad have stepped up resistance in a region where the army already claims to have wiped out al-Qaida as a viable fighting force.

The unrest, brewing for months, is a setback to the U.S.-led war on terror. Further hampering that effort are deteriorating relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan over Afghan claims that Taliban leader Mullah Omar is hiding in Pakistan and suicide bombers are training here.

"Iranian paper gets 700 cartoons about Holocaust"
Columbus Dispatch (registration required) - via AP ^ | March 14, 2006 | Nasser Karimi

Posted on 03/14/2006 11:35:21 AM PST by Dan Middleton

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "TEHRAN, Iran — An Iranian newspaper’s contest for Holocaust-related cartoons has drawn entries from 200 people, with some drawings mocking the World War II slaughter. One entry shows Jews going into a gas pipeline.

Most contest entrants are Iranian, but six are Americans and a few cartoons have been submitted from as far away as Indonesia and Brazil, according to the Hamshahri newspaper. A few of the drawings have been posted online.

Hamshahri began the contest last month as a test of the West’s readiness to print cartoons about the Nazi killing of 6 million Jews."

RADICAL ISLAMISTS TERM BUSH 'ENEMY OF MUSLIMS'

By Sheraz Khurram Khan
Special Correspondent for ASSIST News Service in Pakistan

MANSEHRA, PAKISTAN (ANS) -- Pouring scorn on the West for publishing caricatures satirizing the Prophet Muhammad, speakers at a Hurmat (reverence) Conference on Wednesday, March 15, alleged that US President George W Bush was an enemy of Muslims.

an Urdu daily quoted speakers of the conference as saying, “We will not broker any compromise on the issue of publication of the sacrilegious caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad. We are prepared to give any sacrifice to protect the reverence of the Prophet Muhammad”.

The fiery speakers alleged the religious organizations engaged in fighting a holy war had been banned by the government at the behest of the US.

They were also critical of the ban government imposed on taking out anti-cartoon rallies.

The decision to ban the rallies came after some five people across Pakistan were killed as anti-cartoon protesters turned violent.

Describing US President George Bush as enemy of Islam they alleged that he (Bush) had now wrested backing of the EU.

“It’s time for Muslim rulers to wake up from their slumber. Perpetuation of criminal silence would only bring humiliation to them”, the Urdu daily quoted speakers as saying.

Speaking on the occasion Hafiz Abdul Rehman Maki said that of the problems facing Muslims currently the issue of reverence of the Prophet Muhammad was of fundamental importance.

Not only the EU, he said, but Muslim rulers should also boycott all ‘infidel’ institutions and forums.

The six party religious alliance’s deputy parliamentary leader in the national assembly Hafiz Hussain Ahmad said that infidels had been hatching conspiracies against Islam throughout the history.

He alleged that earlier, the UK had backed Mirza Ghulam Ahmad to crush Muslim holy warriors “and now the US is making President Musharraf work against Mujahideen (holy warriors)”.

Hafiz flayed rulers for effecting toppling of Taleban government in Afghanistan. The fall of Taleban, the religious alliance’s leader alleged had rendered the boundaries of the country insecure.

Former ISI chief General (retired) Hameed Gul, who also addressed the conference, challenged the West’s concept of secularism and termed it as false.

“The west has hurt sentiments of the Muslims by publishing blasphemous sketches of the Prophet Muhammad”, he remarked.

Alluding to President General Pervez Musharraf’s concept of “Enlightened Moderation”, he said protection of reverence of the Prophet Muhammad was not only mandatory for the people having beard but also for those who call them moderate and enlightened.

Major General (Retd) Zaheerul Islam said that infidels would continue to attack unless and until the nation waged holy war against them.

Meanwhile, a central leader of the six party religious alliance Liaqut Baloch said that the alliance would hold Shan-e-Mustafa (reverence of the Prophet Muhammad) conference on March 23.

Articles from WND are generally older news...but in this case, they may be right. We have several articles coming off the Hill saying that guest-worker provisions are close to being hammered out.

They'll die in the House, if Tancredo and Sensenbrenner have their way.

"do you remember how many incidents we saw at TM the first year or two?"

===

Yes, I do. I think a very large number of those were indeed "terrorist related". I think a lot of it is probably still going on, but we have fewer reports, because I think people have become less vigilant, than they were shortly after 9-11.

FBI spokesman Ross Rice says the Sears Tower incident actually happened several months ago. He contradicts the information from our sources.

Who should we believe?

FBI denies media reports of danger at Sears Tower

The FBI on Thursday refuted media reports that a terrorism investigation was under way into an incident involving three men who behaved suspiciously outside the Sears Tower.

While three men did stop near a loading dock at the tower in October, they were not a threat, FBI spokesman Ross Rice said. (Snip)

The men never took any photographs, Rice said Thursday. They were immediately approached by Sears Tower security officers and asked to leave. Chicago police investigated the incident and determined the men were not a threat, Rice said.

The men were driving a rental car that was leased to one of the men under his name, not a false name, Rice said.

FBI investigates bomb threat at NMSU

LAS CRUCES, N.M.

A bomb threat that forced the evacuation of most of New Mexico State University during midterm exams is being looked at as a possible terrorist threat, the FBI said.

The FBI is trying to determine who called the university and whether it was a hoax, said Special Agent Bill Elwell. A similar call to the Las Cruces Sun-News newspaper also led to an evacuation of workers and a lockdown at nearby Central Elementary School.

A man with an Arab accent called the NMSU president's office and the newspaper around 8 a.m. Thursday.

The caller to the Sun-News said, "they were going to blow up (the university) as high as the heavens, so people will know that al-Qaida lives on," according to a receptionist who took the call.

The campus reopened about three hours later. The elementary school and the newspaper reopened about two hours later.

No explosives were found at NMSU or the newspaper.

Review of Operation Swarmer after the first day.

The early RUMINT suggested that this operation was directed at high value targets (mainly Al-Zarqawi). While there are terror targets in the area, this operation is more likely a 'graduation' style exercise for the Iraqi army. The Iraqi army has been participating in progressively complex operations of size and detail over the past 6 - 8 months. These exercises do more to train the leadership in command, control, communications and maneuver. What this furthermore makes clear that the MSM doesn't present, is that the Iraqi army is taking a much larger role in counter terror/insurgency operations than they have in the past. This is setting the stage to free up US troops for pullout.

Expect to see more large scale joint operations over the next few months as the Iraqi army begins to flex its muscles as assume its position as defender of Iraq.

'Zilla, I think you're spot on. The question now is will the MSM see the nexus and report it as such?

Doubt it. The spin that I currently see is that this is a 'wag-the-dog' exercise to deflect attention off W's currently low popularity polls.

The difference between the Times and Trib:

after examining more than 100 reports of suspicious activity since 9/11-We want terrorists to look at Chicago as too hard of a target.

Me too!
