Arrests hit online jihad efforts
Posted by: Neil on Saturday, April 01, 2006 - 03:32 PM
The detention of prominent al-Qaeda activists lies behind the recent disappearance of several key jihad websites, according to militants.
The claim is made in a statement circulating among al-Qaeda supporters.
It begins by stressing the importance of the Internet in prosecuting the "media jihad" and urges supporters to persist in their efforts.
It says: "As you know, the website members and participants as well as its supervisors have played and still playing a major role in delivering messages which are unseen.
"The decision of closing the website down comes as a result of the arrests of some of its staff, and for security reasons, this statement or any other statement will not unfold details related to the matter.
"We are still urging our Mujahideen brothers to keep going
the jihad movement will continue not only through the internet but also through any other media network."

Police thwart suicide bombing in Israel
AP ^ | April 2, 2006

Israeli police headed off a suicide bombing Sunday when they stopped a car trying to enter the northern town of Beit Shean, police said.
Two Palestinians were in the car, police spokeswoman Aliza Azoulai said, without offering further details.
Security officials said earlier they had information that two suicide bombers armed with explosive belts were traveling toward Beit Shean. Police had fanned out across the area, and officers were stationed at schools in Beit Shean and Afula, another northern town that was considered a possible target, the officials said.
Police and rescue services had been placed on high alert around the two cities, and roadblocks were set up to check passing cars, Azoulai said.
A hundred ambulances and dozens of medics were put on call as rescue services went on the highest possible alert in the area, rescue services spokesman Yeruham Mendola said.
Israeli security forces in a high-speed chase on a major highway two weeks ago stopped a van carrying Palestinian militants and explosives they planned on using in an attack.
Thanks for all the links JP, great job once again.

TEHRAN, Iran
Yikes!
I'm going to call my father-in-law who used to be one of the guys who RAN the "Turkey" when he was a senior VP for FP&L waaaaay back in the day. He's got a Ph.d in nuclear physics, too. Have to see what this might have been about. Location is everything as they say. The snippet article doesn't specify exactly where the hole was found. But has anybody here ever started to drill a big hole by first starting a little hole, so that the bigger bit gets an easier BITE? Also, it occurs to me that a decent sized hole could be used to pack C-4 whereas C-4 wrapped around a pipe, while just as effective is also a bit more noticeable. What is going ON here? There must be local news cooperation to prevent a panic however perhaps it's already been covered and folks are just "so what" about the situation.
Me and the wife are sick and have been for a couple of weeks. It's something going around that just seems to hang on and we can't shake it. I've already lost a day without pay and so has she. No paid sick leave left, so it wouldn't surprise me if we missed this. Dang bug. You think it's almost "over" and it comes roaring back. Just a really sore throat and a bad cough. Docs can't do anything. Everybody around here has it or knows somebody who does. Thank the Lord that Spring Break starts at the end of this coming week.

"One dead after explosion at Toronto Tim Hortons"
Updated Sun. Apr. 2 2006 4:33 PM ET
CTV.ca News Staff
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "One man is dead following an explosion at a Tim Hortons restaurant in downtown Toronto.
The blast occurred in the washroom of the coffee shop located near the intersection of Yonge and Bloor Streets, just after 1 p.m.
Emergency crews responded to the scene and tried to help the victim. It is not known if he was a customer or an employee. No other injuries were reported.
Fire department spokesman Daryl Fuglerud said the man had burns to his body, but a fire did not break out in the building after the blast.
"There was a very small amount of smoke upon our arrival
It doesn't appear that we can see much of a fire at all," Fuglerud said.
Witnesses describe a scene of panic inside the restaurant after the explosion.
"A lot of people screaming and screaming," one young woman said.
"As soon as we heard (the) bang, everybody run away," witness George Ribera said.
Police cordoned off approximately one city block and evacuated the area as a precaution.
"We're taking all precautions for members of the public as you can imagine," Toronto Police officer Nick Memme said."
OK, I'm heading over to that thread for updates and to update it if possible.

Bagged one in Toronto
Alleged terrorist nabbed in GTA:
An alleged terrorist -- with links to al-Qaida and Osama bin Laden -- has been arrested in the GTA while trying to flee the country, Sun Media immigration sources say.
In one of the most significant terrorism arrests in Canada since 9/11, a man believed to be a captain of the Pakistani extremist organization Mujahedin-E-Lashkar-E-Tayyba, or LET, which is funded by Osama bin Laden and has direct ties to al-Qaida, was arrested March 16 by Canadian border service officers in Newmarket.
Intelligence sources say members of LET have been trained in Afghan terrorist camps.
Ontario immigration sources say 40-year-old Raja Ghulam Mustafa, a Pakistani national who went by the last name Murtaza, was arrested outside his home with a packed suitcase and a significant amount of cash on him.
TIPPED OFF?
After the arrest by the Canadian border service's Greater Toronto Enforcement Centre officers, Mustafa's residence was searched and a briefcase containing fraudulent documents and a laptop were seized, officials said.
It's believed Mustafa may have been tipped off that GTEC officers were investigating him, so he made plans to flee Canada to the U.S.
Officials told Sun Media Mustafa was "surprised" that he had been found by law enforcement.
Sources say Mustafa had already given his landlady notice that he would be leaving.
