Immigration Debate Heating Up in Senate
WASHINGTON - Founded by immigrants and praised as a haven for the oppressed, the United States now is struggling to decide the fate of as many as 12 million people living in the country illegally.
The Senate takes up the emotional debate on the heels of weekend rallies that drew hundreds of thousands of people protesting attempts to toughen laws against immigrants. Among the ideas that President Bush and members of Congress are considering:
Erecting a fence on the Mexico border to deter illegal immigration.
_Treating people who sneak across the border as felons to be deported.
_Allowing foreigners to stay in the country legally as custodians, dish washers, construction workers and other low-paid employees.
_Allowing those working in the U.S. a path to citizenship.
_Requiring them to get in line behind everyone else back in their home countries who want to become Americans.

Egypt prosecutor charges 13 over Red Sea bombs
Reuters ^ | 3/26/06 | Yusri Mohamed
Posted on 03/26/2006 4:18:29 PM PST by Valin
ISMAILIA, Egypt (Reuters) - Egypt's High State Security Prosecutor charged 13 people during a court session on Sunday of involvement in a series of blasts targeting Red Sea holiday resorts. Two other people are already being tried over the series of bombings in Sharm el-Sheikh in July last year and in Taba and two other beach resorts in October 2004. The attacks killed more than 100 people.
Egyptian prosecutors had originally charged three men over the bombings but the one man charged in absentia, Mohamed Ahmed Saleh Fulayfel, was killed in a gun battle with police. "The accused formed a terrorist organization ... which carried out the explosions in Taba, Nuweiba and participated in perpetrating the attack in Sharm el-Sheikh," prosecution lawyer Hisham Badawi said. Badawi said the group proclaimed the Egyptian leadership religiously illegitimate and targeted foreign tourists. The accused denied the charges and said they confessed under torture. The case is scheduled to resume on May 27.
Several men the authorities have said were wanted in the case have died in gun battles with the police in Egypt's Sinai peninsula. The Egyptian authorities say the bombers were Sinai bedouin, some of them with Palestinian connections, but that it does not believe they had any outside connections. The authorities have previously said they suspect the group behind the bombings was also behind a blast in August that damaged a multinational observer force vehicle.
MamaD did you read the entire article on the plague Dr. He has 30 plague vial slants missing and he goes to a birthday party? And, then waits and looks and waits again......then the story ends with the FBI and to be continued. Will you keep watch for the next part please?
From that article also.........[sounds typical]
Not that anyone was writing off Yersinia pestis. The feds were still badly spooked by the outcome of a May 2000 bioterrorism drill called Operation TOPOFF, which war-gamed the release of aerosolized plague at a Denver concert hall.
Almost from the beginning, the exercise unraveled into leadership clashes, communication breakdowns, personnel and antibiotic shortages, overrun hospitals, quarantine breaks -- in short, just about everything that could go wrong did. When TOPOFF was halted on its fourth day, the cascade of failures had allowed the simulated plague to spread to 11 states, with more than 2,000 deaths.

I did read the entire article - which led me to post it. It seems to verify what I've said all along, we're expendable. I will watch for more on this and post it if it becomes available. This one left me speechless and more concerned than ever in the event of such an occurrence.

MS-13
Fourteen criminal aliens with ties to violent street gangs are in custody following a three-week operation involving federal agents and detectives from the Salt Lake Area Gang Project. Eight of the arrests occurred Friday; six of the suspects were taken into custody earlier this month.
The suspected foreign national gang members and their associates are all from Mexico. Three of the individuals had prior criminal records, including theft, assault and drug violations. All of the foreign nationals arrested have been placed in formal immigration removal proceedings.
The multi-agency operation targeted foreign national gang members and gang associates in Salt Lake County.
Street gangs pose a growing public safety threat to communities throughout this area, said Joseph Romel, assistant special agent in charge for Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Utah.
The violence, sophistication, and scope of these organizations have reached intolerable levels. This operation shows how ICE is working with its law enforcement partners and leveraging its broad authorities to dismantle these criminal organizations.
Since its launch one year ago, Operation Community Shield has resulted in the arrest of 2,388 members of 239 different gangs. More than 40 of those subjects were arrested in Utah.
Operation Community Shield was launched in February 2005 after a threat assessment by all ICE field offices identified MS-13 as one of the largest and most violent street gangs in the country. The assessment found that most of the gang members were foreign-born, in the United States illegally, had prior criminal convictions, and/or were involved in crimes that made them subject to ICEs broad immigration and customs authorities.
ICE kicked off Operation Community Shield with an enforcement operation that resulted in the arrest of more than 100 members of MS-13. In the months that followed, ICE agents nationwide joined ranks and continued targeting MS-13 members in their jurisdictions. In May 2005, ICE expanded Operation Community Shield to include all criminal street gangs and prison gangs with foreign-born members.

IRAN INCREASES FUNDING TO ISLAMIC JIHAD
TEL AVIV [MENL] -- Iran has significantly increased funding to a Palestinian insurgency group.
Officials said Iran has bolstered allocations to Islamic Jihad, regarded as the most active group in the Palestinian war against Israel. They said Iran intends to provide Jihad with millions of dollars in 2006.
Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz said Iran relayed $1.8 million to Jihad in February 2006. In an interview with the Israeli daily Yediot Aharonot on March 21, Mofaz said this was the largest one-time Iranian transfer to Jihad in years.
Officials said Jihad has been working with Iran and Hizbullah to carry out a spate of attacks before the Israeli elections, scheduled on March 28. They said two suicide attacks were foiled in Israel in as many days.

A good article!
A Border War
Tom Tancredo is pulling the immigration debate to the rightand away from Bush.
Tom Tancredo, the Republican congressman, was coming to welcome the new citizens. He was hard to miss when he breezed in, 25 minutes late, dressed in a dark suit and an American-flag necktie. Even so, few in the room recognized him until one man whispered, "He's the guy who sits on the border chasing illegals."
Tancredo may not be a household name yet, but he's doing everything he can to change that. As the House and Senate debate the nation's immigration and border-security laws, the four-term Coloradan has positioned himself as the loudest, angriest voice against the estimated 11 million illegal aliens now living in the United States. They are "a scourge that threatens the very future of our nation," he says. He laments "the cult of multiculturalism," and worries about America's becoming a "Tower of Babel." If Republican presidential candidates don't put the problem atop the agenda in 2008, he says he'll run himself, just to force the front runners to talk about it. Not that he thinks he'd win the White House. He declares himself "too fat, too short and too bald" to be president. If the Republicans lose the election because he's too tough on the issue, he says, "So be it."

Despite Afghanistan's dismissal of the case against a convert to Christianity who faced the death penalty for leaving Islam, a U.S. congressman is blasting the Asian country for its ancient system of laws, and says he will not let the matter rest.
"This is clearly not the end of the story," Rep. Tom Lantos, D-Calif., told Fox News today. "The dots spell out Islamic fanaticism. ... We will not let this matter rest."
