Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - Thread Thirty-Five

Posted on 03/09/2006 10:08:04 PM PST by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Unrest in Pakistan Setback for Terror War
(Full Story)

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- A week of unprecedented urban fighting in the wild tribal belt of North Waziristan has left scores dead and forced thousands to flee their homes, raising the stakes in Pakistan's war on Islamic militancy along the Afghan border.

A jumbled alliance of foreign militants, local tribesmen and Islamic students eager for jihad have stepped up resistance in a region where the army already claims to have wiped out al-Qaida as a viable fighting force.

The unrest, brewing for months, is a setback to the U.S.-led war on terror. Further hampering that effort are deteriorating relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan over Afghan claims that Taliban leader Mullah Omar is hiding in Pakistan and suicide bombers are training here.

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Office of the Spokesman
This information is current as of today, Sun Mar 19 2006 01:36:27 GMT-0800.

Worldwide Caution

December 12, 2005

This Public Announcement updates information on the continuing threat of terrorist actions and violence against Americans and interests overseas. This supersedes the Worldwide Caution dated August 2, 2005 and expires on June 12, 2006.

The Department of State remains concerned about the continued threat of terrorist attacks, demonstrations and other violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests overseas. Ongoing events in Iraq have resulted in demonstrations and associated violence in several countries. Americans are reminded that demonstrations and rioting can occur with little or no warning.

Current information suggests that al-Qa’ida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks against U.S. interests in multiple regions, including Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. These attacks may employ a wide variety of tactics to include assassinations, kidnappings, hijackings and bombings.

Extremists may elect to use conventional or non-conventional weapons, and target both official and private interests. The hotel bombings in Jordan in early November illustrate how terrorists exploit vulnerabilities associated with soft targets. Additional examples of such targets include residential areas, business offices, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, schools, public areas and locales where Americans gather in large numbers, including during holidays.

In the wake of the July 2005 London bombings and the March 2004 train attacks in Madrid, Americans are reminded of the potential for terrorists to attack public transportation systems. In addition, extremists may also select aviation and maritime services as possible targets.

U.S. citizens are strongly encouraged to maintain a high level of vigilance, be aware of local events, and take the appropriate steps to bolster their personal security. For additional information, please refer to “A Safe Trip Abroad” found at http://travel.state.gov.

U.S. Government facilities worldwide remain at a heightened state of alert. These facilities may temporarily close or periodically suspend public services to assess their security posture. In those instances, U.S. embassies and consulates will make every effort to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens. Americans abroad are urged to monitor the local news and maintain contact with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

As the Department continues to develop information on any potential security threats to U.S. citizens overseas, it shares credible threat information through its Consular Information Program documents, available on the Internet at http://travel.state.gov. In addition to information on the Internet, travelers may obtain up-to-date information on security conditions by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the U.S. or outside the U.S. and Canada on a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444.

"2 gang members arrested on Maui
The men are part of a Hispanic gang known for violence"

By Rod Antone
rantone@starbulletin.com

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Two members of one of the largest and most violent Hispanic gangs in the country were identified and arrested on Maui earlier this year, local police and federal law enforcement officials said yesterday.

Adin Coca and Francisco Orlando Osegueda-Gochez were arrested in February for crimes on Maui and were identified by members of the Maui Police Department gang detail as having an affiliation with the Salvadoran gang Mara Salvatrucha, also known as MS-13, officials said.

Though neither man was arrested for offenses directly involving gang activity, federal officials said they were worried about gang members' presence in Hawaii because of the violence to which MS-13 has been linked."

If my child were exposed to TB in school I would be mad as hell. My daughter was in elementary school when a lot of the boat people were allowed to come to California. Shortly thereafter she came home with lice. I was furious and went to the school asking why these people who had just come here were not screened for health and other things. The school told me it wasn't their responsibility and acted like I was wrong for complaining.

In other words the same thing is happening here only with worse medical infectious conditions and no one gives a rats ass.

And, the other story on glass in the baby food at HEB doesn't surprise me at all. They are a Texas grocery chain and IMO the worst store I have ever shopped in. They play games with pricing, they try to sell produce that is wilted, brown and they now cater to the mexican food palate.

Al Qaeda in Lebanon
18/03/2006

Beirut, Asharq Al-Awsat- Worrying signs emerging from Lebanon about the growth of al Qaeda, have triggered a general unease and anxiety in security and diplomatic circles.

The wave of bombings that targeted Beirut and the South and the arrest for several cells whose members have confessed to belonging to al Qaeda, in addition to Abu Musab al Zarqawi claiming responsibility for an attack on Israeli settlements using Katyusha rockets, have all heightened the fear that al Qaeda is seeking a permanent base in Lebanon.

Ahmad Fatfat, the Interior Minister, said he had "impressions" that al Qaeda was seeking to increase its activity in Lebanon. Leading figures in the March 14 coalition went as far as speaking about training camps in northern Lebanon for Sunni militants.

Terror link to Glasgow kidnap

ANDREW Ramsay, the Glasgow accountant abducted this month as he walked home with his girlfriend, claimed to have knowledge of a criminal ring with links to terrorist activity.

Friends say Ramsay, 51, claimed to have stumbled on a £40m money laundering operation and was in fear of his life. He believed huge sums of cash were being raised by a complex Vat fraud — known as carousel trading — and voiced concerns of links with Al-Qaeda.

Police Raid Extremist Bakri's London Home
18/03/2006

London Asharq Al-Awsat- Police raided the house of an Islamic militant cleric on Thursday and confiscated a number of items. No arrests were made.

Omar Bakri Mohammed, a Syrian born cleric, was barred from Britain in August 2005, after the Home Office deemed his presence was "not conducive to the public good". The former spiritual guide of al Ghurabaa and head of al Muhajiroun which disbanded in 2004 currently lives in Beirut. A Scotland Yard spokeswoman confirmed that police had searched the house in Tottenham, north London on Thursday.

In a telephone conversation with Asharq al Awsat, Bakri, aged 46, said the raid scared his children. They confiscated two computers, including a laptop used for personal use, and a number of books and articles about Salafi and religious discussions.

The raid took place as five of his followers were arrested, including the lawyer Anjam Choudry, secretary general of al Ghurabaa and al Muhajiroun who was released Friday without charge. Omran Jawid and Abdul Rahman Salim were charged with incitement for racial hatred, after they took part in angry demonstrations in protest at the publications of cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed.

~snips from W. Virginia's public pensions may be tied to terrorist sponsored countries

55 stocks in state pension portfolios belong to companies that have ties to the governments of Iran, Libya, North Korea, Sudan or Syria.

West Virginia pensions owned $1.004 million in Total stock, $1.029 million in PetroChina

Iran’s government draws 40 to 50 percent of its revenue from oil, and Syria and Sudan rely on it almost as much, said Christopher Holton, an analyst at the Center for Security Policy and the organization’s vice president.

“So when you help to develop that industry, you’re helping to bring money into their treasury, you’re funding their terrorist enterprises, you’re aiding the insurgency in Iraq,” he said. “Terrorism costs money ... and there are only certain ways a regime like Iran’s or Sudan’s can get money.”

Divesting in companies with terror links could be justified as a financially sound decision in its own right, but the board lacks the expertise to determine which companies have such ties, Slaughter said.

Moscow Subway Tunnel Collapses; No Injuries

MOSCOW (AP) -- A section of tunnel collapsed in the Moscow subway Sunday, triggering a fire on a train, officials said. No injuries were reported.

Emergency Situations Ministry spokesman Viktor Beltsov said a concrete section fell on a train between the Sokol and Voikovskaya stations in north-central Moscow, and that train caught fire. Rescuers safely evacuated all passengers, he said.

Train service was halted.

Moscow subway chief Dmitry Gayev said the accident apparently was caused by workers who were erecting a street billboard in the area and damaged piles supporting the tunnel's roof, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported.

Moscow subway chief Dmitry Gayev said the accident apparently was caused by workers who were erecting a street billboard in the area and damaged piles supporting the tunnel's roof, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported.

A fleet of ambulances and fire engines responded to the subway stations, creating huge traffic jams. Authorities launched additional buses for travelers.

Gayev said subway service will be restored Monday morning.

Closeup view of terrorists in training

BEIRUT, Lebanon -- Recruits at Osama bin Laden's terrorist training camps in Afghanistan were clamoring for suicide missions against the United States more than a year before the Sept. 11 attacks, according to al-Qaida documents declassified by the U.S. Defense Department.

One document published on the Pentagon Web site last week contained rare criticism of bin Laden from an al-Qaida operative, who accused the terrorist leader of monopolizing decision-making and ignoring advice.

Note: I want to focus on that "baby walker" for a moment. I firmly believe that baby strollers, backpacks on wheelchairs;backpacks and handbags should be searched at all public events before going into stadiums; special events and airports. Anything can be hidden in these objects.
