POLICE are unfairly criticising the Muslim community for not doing enough to track down those responsible for retaliatory attacks following the Cronulla riot, community leader Keysar Trad said.
Detective Superintendent Ken McKay yesterday released photos and footage of those involved in the riot at Sydney's Cronulla and the revenge attacks that followed, in the hope offenders will be caught.
But he told ABC radio today there had been little response to a video showing a number of Middle Eastern men throwing projectiles at passing cars.
"The members of the Middle Eastern community need to understand if they want live in this society, a law abiding society, the only way the police can operate is with community help," he said.
But Mr Trad, president of the Islamic Friendship Association of Australia, called Supt Mckay's comments "an unfair criticism of the community".
"As a community we are sick and tired of people pointing a finger at us and saying why aren't we doing enough," he told ABC radio.
"The community leaders don't generally mix with the criminal element and we don't recognise these people." The quality of the footage was an additional barrier, Mr Trad said.
"It's very, very grainy and unless you know the individuals you're not going to recognise them from looking at that very poor quality footage," he said.
"If the beat police can't recognise them then the chances of anyone recognising them are very, very slim."
Mr Trad said he had even offered to arrange an interview for Supt McKay on Arabic language television to air the footage.
"But for some reason the police cancelled," he said.
"We were willing to stand side by side."
The Muslim community was trying to nurture a positive relationship with police, he said.
"But comments like this that point the finger are very unhelpful.
"They are undermining the trust that has developed."
