For most teenagers, going to college is part of the American dream. But the cost of fulfilling that dream has become a source of controversy, as illegal immigrants sometimes pay less than U.S. citizens to attend the same college.
Illegal immigrants living in nine states can now attend public college at in-state tuition costs. But legal U.S. citizens still have to pay out-of-state tuition at schools outside of their home state. That price difference can be tens of thousands of dollars.
Many say it's discrimination if states offer a cheaper public college education to illegal immigrants, and some out-of-state American students are suing in federal and state courts. Others argue it's the best way to make sure immigrant students reach their potential.
"We'll be arguing it doesn't really matter if the U.S. citizens end up paying more or paying less but that they're being treated unequally," said Kris Kobach, co-counsel in lawsuits against tuition laws in Kansas and California. Kobach added that a 1996 federal law guiding this issue is "remarkably clear language for Congress it makes it very clear you can't do this."
The federal Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 prohibits public colleges from favoring undocumented students by offering them in-state tuition rates and not extending that offer to U.S. citizens.

There is no reson for in-state tuition being offered illegal aliens that I will ever accept.
Why can't they just get student loans like everyone else? Is there really a demand in the public to go forward with this? Have there been polls? Seriously, where do politicians come up with this nonsense?
ol' Miguel who sneaks in here without proper standing gets a break for being what?...illegal?....I guess there's a penalty for being American anymore.
The idiot Tom Reilly who wants the governorship in Massachusetts is for in-state tuition for illegals.
He will lose a lot of votes because of this.
All are asking: what kind of convoluted logic can justify this?
Get a fellowship. Then they will wave the whole tuition cost.
***Illegal immigrants*** = (LAW BREAKERS) living in nine states can now attend public college at in-state tuition costs.
I have nothing but self-righteous anger about this issue...
Now I can finally see a Just Cause for the ACLU to take on for citizens....
Instead of paying out of state tuition at a school outside of my state, I can simply renounce my citizenship, move to Mexico, become a Mexican citizen, and then come back as an illegal and then pay in state tuition instead?
The prospect of becoming an illegal Mexican immigrant is starting to have lots of perks. No payroll taxes, no income taxes, free healthcare in hospitals, free education for my kids, and now in state tuition. Screw being a US Citizen, illegal Mexican immigration is where it's at!
Anything for a buck. Drop tuition rates for a whole class of students, so more will attend - Ka-Cheeng.
What other country can you sneak into, and pay LESS tuition to that countries college students, and on top of that, demand more classes taught in your native tongue? And get them?
The liberal, free-for-all mindset has destroyed all - they keep coming, and we keep paying, and paying, and paying. We cannot subsidize the entire world!
There is no justification that these people recieve one dime of tuition, period. Emergency health care is one thing, but a college education is NOT a right, no matter how much teh liberals demand it is, and it is not our job to educate them.
I was in the CA colleges in the late 80's and early 90's, and it was bad then, with severe overcrowding, and being a severe minority in a class of immigrants who slowed the classes down to being illiterate in English. (despite it being in the college's charter that one must have a working knowledge of English in both reading and writing to attend).
I was mad back then, and it looks like it's worse. It used to get my blood boiling that immigrants and such got PRIORITY in selecting classes, and us average suburban kids got the dregs.
Just like our hospitals, the CA college systems are being overwhelmed with illegals...but with the colleges, at least they get paid...and how often do you think the tuition is funded by state or Federal funds? It's well known to all students, even back in the 80's, that if you had a drop of Hispanic blood, you claimed it, to get virtually a free ride.
I swear, my life would be much better if I snuck across the US border, snuck back with a tan and dyed hair, and pretended not to speak English. I could get a fake ID, use someone else's SS to buy a house, get cheaper tuition (if not free), free health care, and if anyone hassles me, I can sue them and be awarded their property.
I hate to rant, and I'm sorry I feel this way, with the number of friends, family and coworkers who are from Mexico and South America who are vibrant, wonderful people, but I'm fed up - and many of them feel the same way! We have GOT to end this giveaway by liberals, who only do it to buy votes and sooth their tortured, blackened and guilty souls. We need to take care of our OWN, not illegals.
Just doing the oogling of the girls, cheating on finals, and drinking kegs of beer that American college kids won't do.
I wonder what kind of sh*tstorm we could start by putting our SSN's, Birth Certs, Passports, up for sale on e*Bay? I've been toying with trying it just for that reason.
Any politician who supports these type of bills needs to be publicly shamed and discredited.
Go to their campaign appearances and try to publicly ask them why they want to take college discounts away from U.S. citizens and give them to illegal aliens.
Ask them what they would say to an American citizen who can't go to college because an illegal alien took their discount.
"Many say it's discrimination if states offer a cheaper public college education to illegal immigrants, and some out-of-state American students are suing in federal and state courts. Others argue it's the best way to make sure immigrant students reach their potential."
There is a switch there in those two sentences. I wonder if the writer is pushing an agenda? (I already know the answer). If you look at the first sentence, the words "illegal immigrants" appear. Then the second sentence says "immigran students".
Typical of the MSM....inject their biased opinions into "news".
If an illegal gets instate tuition then an out-of-State student should also. Make it one fee for all.
We have a really sweet deal going on near me, the school buses actually go to the Port of Entry and pick up Mexican children who walk across and take them to school here in the US. Until the last few years the buses went across the border and through the town in Mexico, then came back and took them to school. They decided there was liability in that and now just pick them up at the border. Amazing!! I don't pay taxes in that district, but can't imagine the taxpayers aren't yelling about the whole situation.
So...when people ask why illegals get to go to the University near here and get all kinds of perks, the U officials say well most of them have gone to school in the US their whole life an now deserve to go to college.
These children are not even illegals, they live in Mexico and still get the benefit of all the education, though we sure have our share of illegals too in our schools. Just can't figure out what people could possibly be thinking.
