FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) - Former Minnesota Twins great Kirby Puckett had a stroke at his Arizona home Sunday and was taken to a hospital for surgery, the team announced from its spring training camp.

The 44-year-old Puckett, who led Minnesota to World Series titles in 1987 and 1991 and is a member of the Hall of Fame, was taken to a Scottsdale hospital.

"The Minnesota Twins and major league baseball ask fans to keep Kirby and his family in their thoughts and prayers,'' the team said in a statement.

I'm certainly not speaking authoratively on this, but didn't Kirby begin to get in some trouble after he suffered the eye malady and had to leave the game?  It appeared, on the surface, that he may have developed a substance abuse problem.

Anyone have a better take on this than I?  Prayers for Kirby and his family.

Bummer. I always liked Kirby Pucket. If not for his medically shortened career, he would have been one of the all time greats of baseball.

Prayers for him and his family.

Lifetime .300 hitter, 6 gold gloves, and a lot of fun.

When he signed his first long-term contract with the Twins, he said, "I'm gonna go home and make me a lot of little Kirbys."

Gotta love an attitude like that, rather than the spoiled cockiness prevalent today. I still remember the World Series against the Braves when he robbed the Braves of a home run with an amazing over-the-wall catch in center field...

IIRC he had to retire from baseball early due to retinal problems...

Just F*ck It. Not Puckett!

Prayers for him and his family!

Kirby Puckett was the star of the Minnesota Twins of my youth. I remember he had glaucoma too, it's amazing how he played so well with all these health problems. Hope he gets better.

One of my favorite players, even if he was an integral part in defeating my Braves in 91.

One of the alltime greats, his carer was cut short way to soon, let us pray his life is not cut short also.

Yea I remember too. The Braves break my heart on a yearly basis.

Go Braves!

I ran into him upon entering a store in Minneapolis a couple years back. He stood and waited holding the door for me. Nice guy.

Years ago my son was into collecting baseball cards and there was a pin with Kirbys picture on it with his stuff. I asked if I could have it just because of the great smile he had in the picture. I still have that pin in a drawer in the rec room.

Yes I know it's wikipedia, but in this case they are correct.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirby_Puckett

Puckett had been well admired throughout his career and for some years after. His unquestionable baseball prowess, outgoing personality, charity work, community involvement, healthy image, good rapport with the media, and nice-guy attitude earned him the respect and admiration of fans across the country. However, Puckett was arrested for allegedly groping a woman in a bar restroom on September 5, 2002. He was acquitted, but following the publicity and trial, he and his wife Tonya endured a bitter divorce. Since those events, Puckett has largely withdrawn from public appearances. Kirby and Tonya Puckett have two children, Catherine and Kirby Jr.

Kirby's family has had a history of health problems. I believe that at least 2 of his brothers have already died from poor health. Kirby has really let himself go, physically; I'd be shocked if he weren't over 300 lbs. This is definitely related to poor health - not drugs or anything else.
