Support For Bush Fades In 5 Southern (VA, NC, SC, GA, and FL)

A majority of adults in five Southern states that President Bush won in the 2004 election now disapproves of his job performance and says the Iraq war was not worth fighting, a poll has found.

CHARLOTTE, N.C.-- A majority of adults in five key Southern states disapproves of President Bush's job performance and says the war in Iraq was not worth fighting, according to an Elon University poll released Friday.

In the survey, 52 percent of respondents said they disapproved or strongly disapproved of Bush's job performance, compared to 43 percent who said they approved or strongly approved.

Asked whether the war in Iraq was worth fighting, a slim majority -- 51 percent -- said no, while 44 percent said yes.

All five of the states polled -- Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida -- went to Bush in the 2004 presidential election by margins ranging from 58 percent in South Carolina and Georgia to 52 percent in Florida.

Less than 18 months later, Bush isn't even close to majority approval in any of those states.

''For him not to even break [50 percent], not to even approach it, says all you need to say,'' said Hunter Bacot, an Elon political science professor and director of the poll. 'In five `red' states that have been ardent supporters of Bush, he can't even approach 50 percent.''

The telephone survey of 1,277 adults was taken Feb. 20-23 and Feb. 26-March 2 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points.

Recent national polls on the president's popularity have placed his overall approval rating in the mid to high 30s.

In the Elon poll, Georgia residents were the most supportive of Bush, with 48 percent saying they approved or strongly approved of his job performance, while 48 percent disapproved or strongly disapproved.

Support for Bush was lowest in Florida, Virginia and North Carolina, at 42 percent.

Fifty-six percent of people disapproved of Bush's handling of the Iraq conflict.

In North Carolina and Florida, roughly 4 in 10 surveyed expressed strong disapproval of the president on Iraq.

Stumbled across this in the military early bird. Have to wonder what this does for moral for our men and women in uniform?

In any scientific study, the methods and population control group are always specified. How come the MSM never does this?

Sounds like another biased poll, which oversampled Dems.

Similar to this one:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1589989/posts

"Of the poll of 1,273 adults, 35 percent were Democrats, 26 percent independents and 25 percent Republicans. It has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus three percentage points. "

On Election Day in 2004, the voter breakdown was:

37 percent GOP, 37 percent Democrat, 26 percent independent"

Kicking Dubai out of our ports would push the approval rating back above 50%.

The average American doesn't want a bunch of Middle Easterners having anything to do with running our ports. I just wish that reality would dawn on the White House.

Boy, with poll numbers like that, I hope Bush gets the hint and doesn't run again in 2008.

end the ports story - either by killing the deal, or approving it as part of a new comprehensive ports security measure.

revoke the student visa of the Taliban spokesman at Yale and have INS pick him up.

that will give him 5-6 points back within a week.

the white house political operation stinks. we have two tough elections coming up in 06 and 08.

Damn it, if this keeps up, President Bush won't be able to run for re-election..

By the way, what was the opinion of the Democrats in the poll? Still bottom sucking at 20%?

I agree, he was speaking out middle of last year. Letting us know what is going on, his vision, something my beloved and I were thrilled to see. He should be talking to the American people and not just through news bites.

We want to know, the good the bad and the ugly. He has the ability to really get out what is important he just doesn't seem to want to do that. imho

these polls are BS ....
I have never been polled , I do not know a single person that has ever been polled.
Were I ever to be polled I would tell them : I stand by President Bush 100% and I will never turn my back on this good man who has done so much for our country. I would love to see him run again in 08 .
I would love to tell a poll how lucky we are to have him as our President. But they do not ask.
That's why I love FR !

Ho hum another poll.

When are you guys ever going to find out that the MSM manufactures these polls for news.

Rush has been stating this for years, but it seems some are addicted to the crack called the MSM and liberal university elite.

I wonder when the liberal MSM and the liberals in the country will realize that Bush is not running in '06 or '08? I say let them keep up the stupid polls as if they are running against Bush again, and their clocks will be cleaned once more in the mid-term elections.

The MSM is always a day late and a dollar short.

You are so correct - MSM is driving this truck. GWB must strike back because Fox and talk radio cannot carry the ball against the antique media, where Joe six-pack gets his news.

Interesting poll.
In the last election 43.4% of the respondents voted for Kerry, 46.3% voted for Bush.
Military supports the war two to one.
