Israel authorises military exports to China
AFP ^ | 3 March 06 | Unknown

JERUSALEM: Israel’s defence ministry has authorised Israeli companies to resume the export of military hardware to China after months of trade blocked under US pressure, an official said Thursday.

“Procedures for granting export permits is open again,” an official from the ministry told AFP on condition of anonymity.

The director of the ministry, Yaakov Toren, was quoted as saying in the Israeli press that some export permits were issued “in cooperation with the United States”.

“Companies will come and see us (at the defence ministry) and we will judge on a case by case basis with or without consultation with the United States,” Toren said.

“We are two independent countries which respect their relative interests,” the director said.

The ministry also intends to set up a special department responsible for supervising necessary authorisation for companies wishing to export weapons. afp

This could easily be disinformation. The US may have given permission as we already know how to counter the electronics. Before Desert One the French sold Iraq new Air Control Radar. Before it was shipped the CIA substituted certain chips so that when US electronic warfare pales approached they could shut down the system.

Correction: I should have written Desert Storm, not Desert One.

Well, they might be selling third-rate stuff and using contacts in Chinese companies to gain information to pass on to the U.S. They are still an important ally.

"Israel would not exist without the US."

I think it's a lot truer to say that without its Jews, the U.S. would not be the world's pre-eminent power.

What's wrong with Israel's Jews that they're dependent upon the Christian US for their existence? And why is Israel's GDP per capita below Guam and Greece's and light years away from the US's?

>>>"This could easily be disinformation."

Maybe Israel is threatening to attack Iran and the current administration has just cut a deal with Pakastan that the U.S. would restrain Israel from such action. A way to break this deal would be for Israel to make an announcement such as this. It may be just a posturing for more $$$ or weapons from the U.S. or for a break in the agreement.

We'll never know until it plays out. It's clear that something has changed though.

"How stupid of Israel. The technology that they export to Red China will undoubtedly be placed into the hands of Israel's enemies. Indeed, Red China itself IS one of Israel's strategic enemies."

As an American Jew, I have to sadly agree with you and with other posters here who are saying much worse. I still support Israel, but I strongly condemn this action and all actions like it.

I'm not sure why Israel sells these kind of things to the Chinese. Obviously, they want the money, but it is very hard for me to take that they would betray America in this way.

There are, significant amounts of leftists in Israel, as one of the posters here has stated. For the life of me, I can't understand that. Here in the U. S., it is possible for people to create the illusion of safety and think they can betray the forces of freedom and still not face the consequences themselves.

I can't imagine how Jews in Israel could feel that way---or be so crazy as to think that the left will provide them with some kind of security. Or to be so insane as to think that if they are just nice to their enemies and do what they want everything will be okay. But clearly such sentiments do exist in Israel. A testament, I would say, to the power of the worldwide organized hard left (WOHL).

Israel also sells weapons to the Russian Federation, Kazakhstan, and has even thought about selling weapons to Pakistan!!!

But, we also do sell weapons to Saudi Arabia, and weapons tech to Russia and China (Thanks, clintoon).

The componets that Israel sells to Russia involve High-tech avaonics for the new Mig 1.44 and Sukhoi Su-47 Stealth fighter projects, as well as smart bombs using GLONASS and US GPS, UAV's, and cruise missile technology, a stealth bomber, and upgrades for Russian MiG 29's and SU-37's. The cruise missile technology has been exported to Iran, one of Israel's worst enemies. In a way, Israel is shooting itself in the foot Also, Israel has sold Russia the technology to build a wall to seperate it from hotspots in Chechnya. Russia has also obtained technology for advance night vision and optics from the Israelis, and cloned it for their use. The Same thing has happened with the Chinese.

This technology eventually trickles down to the Arab/Islamic countries who oppose Israel.

After the Cold war, all US technology that went to Israel was also shared with the Russians. Now, Russia is rapidly modernizing it's forces, like China is doing.

That could also be the problem with us arming India. If we arm India, we must stipulate that India does not sell any US weapons technology to Russia.

I think it's a lot truer to say that without its Jews, the U.S. would not be the world's pre-eminent power.

You must be joking. Without "our Jews," who would be the preeminent power?

You also seem to forget that had Israel not taken Iraq's nuclear reactor out (opposed vehemently by the rest of the world including the Reagan White House), Saddam would now have nuclear weapons and Americans would be building nuclear shelters in their backyards.

Israel took out the nuclear reactor in its own self-interest, not America's. The Soviet and Chinese nuclear weapons are far greater threats and we don't have nuclear shelters in our backyards. If the Iraqis had developed a nuclear weapon, it would have been used against Israel first.

If Israel is now selling stuff to China, I'm sure its with U.S. agreement. Now a real threat to American security comes from the huge sums the U.S. is forced to borrow every single year not just from China but also the oil-rich Islamofascist states. Absolutely nothing could possibly put the U.S. in a more precarious position than that.

Why is it precarious to have countries invest their money in the US keeping our interest rates lower and providing capital for our development. China and the Middle East have a real stake in the US and the dollar. It is a two-edged sword.

One more thing: American is supplying many billions of dollars of the most advanced military hardware to Israel's greatest enemies every single year, and you're complaining about this?

The big difference is that they, unlike Israel, pay for it. This lowers our own defense costs. Israel attacked the USS Liberty repeatedly with aircraft and torpedo boats killing 34 and wounding 171. They also hired Pollard to spy against us and been lobbying ever since to have him released. The Israelis have been selling arms over our objections for years.

Tensions Over Israeli Arms Sales To China

Israeli arms deals with China are continuing to make waves in relations between Jerusalem and Washington. The Pentagon has frozen Israel's planned $50 million participation in the development of the Lockheed Martin (LMT ) F-35 Joint Strike Fighter -- a huge project that could total over $250 billion. The immediate cause for the Pentagon's decision was an Israeli move to supply Beijing with spare parts to upgrade its fleet of Israeli attack drones. Israeli defense industry sources say that by curtailing Israel's role in the F-35 project, the U.S. is signalling to the European Union that it should retain its 16-year-old embargo on arms sales to China -- an issue that has caused tension between Washington and the EU. In 2000, Israel bowed to U.S. pressure to refrain from selling $1 billion worth of Phalcon early warning planes to Beijing.
