Prevent Global Warming -- Raise the ALBEDO?

How you can help reduce global warming. Most of us want to help, but don't know how. You can individually help stop global warming.

First a little science. The problem is that too much of the sun's radiation is being absorbed in the atmosphere and on the earth's surface. Green-house gases allow high frequency radiation like ordinary visible light into the earth, but block lower frequency radiation like heat radiation from leaving the earth. They act like a one way mirror, energy comes in, but doesn't get back out.

"Albedo" means "The fraction of electromagnetic radiation reflected by a celestial body." Currently the albedo of the earth is about .30, which means 30% of the sun's energy is radiated back into space. We need to raise the albedo for earth and reflect more energy back into space thereby cooling our planet. It's fairly simple and you can help.

Snow reflects about 90%, a grass lawn reflects only 20%, sand can be up to 40%.

You can help raise the earth's albedo with the following steps:

  1. Buy a white car.

Dark colored cars absorb the sun's rays and turn them into heat, which is trapped by the green house gases. White cars constantly reflect more of the sun's energy back into space, thereby cooling the planet. Every second your white car is in sunlight you are reducing the temperature of the planet - every second!

  2. Have an shiny metal roof on your house.

Instead of dark shingles that absorb the heat, have a shiny metal roof installed. Every day you will be pumping energy from earth into outer space thereby cooling the planet. A "Cool Roof" also cuts down onthe energy needed for air conditioning.

  3. Replace part of your lawn with a white gravel rock garden.

Instead of your grass absorbing heat, the white gravel will reflect radiation back into space.

  4. Become an advocate for "Cool Pavements", road materials that cool cities by reflecting more heat thereby lower city temperatures and reducing pollution from ozone.

Albedo, eh? Obligatory obscure reference time!

What if I live where it snows and is cold for a lot of the year? A dark roof (or dark car) will absorb all of that energy, reducing my need for greenhouse-gas-emitting natural gas...

Senator Byrd does his part by wearing high albedo clothing.

Speed through the desert, throwing lots of light-colored sand into the air.

Burn material that generates white smoke.

Wear an aluminum-foil hat.

Then there's "algore-o", which, instead of registering reflectance, registers a ratio of heat to light generated by a dense body.

Snow reflects about 90%

So, let's have more snow, and thereby cool the earth.

Sounds sensible to me...

I remember seeing a house near JPL with gravel rock roof not shiny roof and gravel rock lawn no grass but no white car around.

Although this is intended as comedy I hate it when the dummies learn a new word. Like "environment"...

Is it? I've seen steps 3 and 4 promoted heavily by enviro-whackos.

If it's meant to be humorous, he's got to work a little harder. (e.g., "Buy a white Hummer.")

Save the snow monkeys!

We need to raise the albedo for earth and reflect more energy back into space thereby cooling our planet. It's fairly simple and you can help.

A little more melting of the Arctic Ice and there will be more precipitation in the high arctic. This precipitation will be year around snow in the mountains of Quebec and Labrador and eventually the Laurentian Glaciers will flow again.

Extra year around snow will also raise the albedo.

In some aspect IMHO deforestation is bad. If they cut old trees up there they'd need to plant new trees instead of building houses that would fall later in the landslides. Even the bible says, the foolish man built his house upon the sand and the rains came tumbling down.

Goths are primarily responsible for global warming! But I wish that I had a goth lawn. It would cut itself.

Goth
n.
1. (Ethnol.) One of an ancient Teutonic race, who dwelt between the Elbe and the Vistula in the early part of the Christian era, and who overran and took an important part in subverting the Roman empire.

Note: Under the reign of Valens, they took possession of Dacia (the modern Transylvania and the adjoining regions), and came to be known as Ostrogoths and Visigoths, or East and West Goths; the former inhabiting countries on the Black Sea up to the Danube, and the latter on this river generally. Some of them took possession of the province of Moesia, and hence were called Moesogoths. Others, who made their way to Scandinavia, at a time unknown to history, are sometimes styled Suiogoths.

2. One who is rude or uncivilized; a barbarian; a rude, ignorant person. Chesterfield.

I know. I meant goth in the Switchblade Symphony / Tori Amos / Bauhaus / Sisters of Mercy sense of the word.
