GREGORY'S GIGGLES: NBCNEWS WHITE HOUSE REPORTER CALLS SHOW 'DRUNK' Thu Mar 02 2006 08:52:09 ET

NBC White House correspondent David Gregory, who apologized last week for calling White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan a "jerk," called into MSNBC's IMUS Thursday morning -- apparently drunk!

Gregory is traveling with the president in India.

IMUS: Let's go to the White House correspondent David Gregory.

DAVID GREGORY: I'm OK.

IMUS: You can calls us later if you want.

GREGORY: [Laughter] [Laughter] [Laughter] [Laughter]

IMUS: Are you drunk?

GREGORY: [Laughter] [Laughter]

IMUS: Are you all right David?

GREGORY: India is a wonderful language and i've been learning, where's my little sheet here. I've been learning some new phrases to come home. But any way, that being one of them and i just think it's nice.

IMUS: It is.

GREGORY: Thank you.

IMUS: Having a lot of fun there. What's wrong with you?

GREGORY: I just think it's funny. [Laughter] [Laughter] [Laughter]

CHARLES: He's drunk.

IMUS: He is drunk!

CHARLES: Oh god.

IMUS: Why don't you compose yourself and get back to us. You want to?

GREGORY: [Laughter] [Laughter] [Laughter]

IMUS: What are you in some harrem?

IMUS: What? David?

GREGORY: No, i'm fine.

IMUS: We need a camera.

Oh my lord.

IMUS: Somebody's got --

GREGORY: i was -- remember that movie "Arthur" with Dudley Moore where he just thinks funny things and that's what was going on. If i could find this sheet, actually i just found it. Anyway.

IMUS: You have any news? [Laughter]

IMUS: we got to go, we'll get back to you.

GREGORY: I'm sorry.

IMUS: That's all right.

IMUS: Well, call us back will you?

GREGORY: Anyway. There are serious things going on here which i know you're very interested in.

IMUS: We don't have any time for them now. Quickly.

GREGORY: Big deal between India and the United States. The upshot is we're going to provide nuclear know-how and fuel to india which they need for their economy to grow. But since they never signed the nonproliferation treaty it's a real turn around and critics worry that it sends the wrong message to other parts of the world.

IMUS: Ok.

GREGORY: I would add, i would add that this is how you say thank you.

IMUS: What is it again?

[Speaking foreign language]

IMUS: Well that's great. But we have to go. It's always nice to hear from you.

GREGORY: I'll call you after dinner.

IMUS: NBC Chief White House Correspondant from New Delhi, India. Clearly drunk.

The Whitehouse press corps should be drug tested for W's safety.

It's always Happy Hour somewhere on the planet. Does that help?

I can just imagine Scott McClellan at the next White House press conference.

"Sleep it off, David!"

That would be "Namaste".

It wasn't a spoof. I watch Imus every morning on MSNBC and it was the real thing. However, Imus frequently says to his guests "What are you, drunk"? Gregory was either drunk or extremely tired, I never heard him like that before.

I'm thinking he must be high on something, maybe cocaine. It's a lot cheaper there. He probably loaded up.

That sounds like a good guess to me. I assume the press press does not pass through customs if they are flying on Air Force One. Does anyone know if Gregory was traveling with the President or on a separate plane?

I wonder if the phone call (from a foreign country to the US) was picked up by the NSA. This call could very easily be interpreted (by any NSA monitor) as a potential threat to the President. He/she would be remiss in NOT reporting the call to his/her superiors.

I remember during the night of Bush's first Presidential election victory, when for the whole evening it was a tight race and the Liberal Network talking heads were convinced that Gore would win.

As it finally became apparent that Gore would lose, I switched over from ABC's Peter Jennings who was angry and near tears, to CBS where Dan Rather was in shock. I then clicked over to NBC that had David Gregory outside of the White House looking VERY unhappy. He finished his report by saying that Bush had won the election. But the camera broadcast was on longer than he had realized, and he, thinking he was off the air, dropped his arm holding the microphone down to his side, bit down on his lower lip with a big frown, and stomped his leg down hard in obvious anger and frustration over the Bush win. A liberal hissy-fit on national TV.

What we are seeing here is the self destruction of an agry frustrated leftist ideologue of the Liberal mass media that has been losing ground (and power) ever since.

I just heard the tape and I really do think he's saying "HINDI is a wonderful language". He had just finished saying "namaste" to Imus and apologizing because he thought Imus wouldn't like to hear that greeting.

This does make him sound a tad less inebriated.

He was stoned, IMO, not drunk. He wasn't slurring his words.

The audio doesn't match the transcript above. Some parts are there - most aren't. It's pretty funny all the same.

"How dare you bring sanity ...to this Gregory-bashing thread?"

Just trying to keep it real yo. But don't worry, it's so rare that I am accused of bringing sanity to anything, that it won't happen again until 2007.

You're right, I've heard him ask just about everyone at one time or another, "Are you drunk?"

I missed him this morning because I was on the road but I just listened to the 25 second clip that Drudge provided and I think Matt got taken in by this one.

McQuirk and McCord refer to Drudge all the time and I'd bet that this will be clarified tomorrow morning.

We in the general public can't learn this info unless we have a tipster inside the WH travel office. But the way it works is a small pool of representative reporters always goes on AF1. The pool is usually the wire services and selected reporters from print and broadcast media. The rest of the WH press corps flies on a separate plane. It leaves and arrives before AF1 so the reporters can be on the ground to cover the President's arrival.

"He was stoned, IMO, not drunk. He wasn't slurring his words."

He probably drank a six-pack to chase down his new Rx of Valium and Prozac. We need to ask women who got close to him today; to see if they got pinched or if he tried to pick them up.

Here's a chance for some REAL investigative reporting.
