THE K-9 squad of the US Secret Service is living in the lap of five-star hotel luxury in India to keep President George W. Bush safe on his maiden visit to New Delhi, officials and media said today.
The top dogs accompanying a huge security contingent checked into reserved rooms at two landmark premises ahead of Mr Bush who reached the Indian capital late yesterday.
But the animals were at work before dawn today at New Delhi's Rajghat mausoleum of India's freedom icon Mahatma Gandhi where Mr Bush was to place a wreath later in the day, the officials said.
How they dealt with the unfamiliar pungent smells of India was anybody's guess.
"We have our own drills but the US Secret Service is pressing their dog squad at locations where the president will visit later today," a senior officer, in-charge of the Delhi Police Dog Training School, said.
He said the canines of the two agencies were kept separate to prevent a possible "clash" at inspection sites.
"These things have been carefully worked out," the officer said without willing to be named in line with an official muzzle strapped on to Indian security personnel not to disclose details of the three-day presidential visit.
The pack of 17 American dogs trained to sniff out explosives were sleeping in air-conditioned rooms on the same floor of the plush Maurya Sheraton where Mr Bush and his entourage are housed. They are also at Le Meridien with other secret service personnel, Indian media reported.
Five rooms have been reserved for the german sheppards and labrador retrievers in the two hotels where a room costs well above $US200 ($268) a night.
"They (Secret Service) have even brought their own dog food," the officer sniffed.
The Hindu newspaper noted that the humble dog word was not to be mentioned in the presence of the K-9 squad.
Each mutt boasts a rank from sergeant-major to lieutenant, The Asian Age noted.
"I never heard the press sneer about Bill Clinton's dog.
Which one???
The dog's nose developed bleeding, purple spots before it was ultimately killed in an "accident"...
LOL.....maybe. However, the odors in India don't seem to have prevented a ground-breaking deal between India and the USA: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1588339/posts
I have been reading the coverage of Pres. Bush's trip to India in the Australian media...most of the coverage has been extremely negative (reminiscent of the moonbat MSM coverage in the US). Other FReepers have pointed out a steady stream of negative coverage in the Western media.
As a result, I would take this article with a spoonful of salt.

Nothing but the best for our dogs.
Look at the size of the teeth on that thing!
I will put it to you this way: when pooch chomps your ass, you know you're chomped.
Heh, heh... that's Twinkles the Working Dog. He's taking a break from the Viking Kittens threads to come visit.
Crappy article and sad commentary.
Ok, so the K9 unit brought its own food, so what? Dogs can get very ill (and a sick dog will not work) if their food is changed. Since the work of these highly trained animals could mean life or death for the President, it's a good thing they are kept in top condition.
Now I know why they say that AMERICA IS GOING TO DOGS!!!
