Majority of NOLA Residents Approve of Mayor's Response to Katrina

Blacks much more likely than whites to approve of job done by local leaders:

PRINCETON, NJ -- A majority of current New Orleans residents say they approve of the job mayor Ray Nagin did in responding to the effects of Hurricane Katrina, according to a new CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll. Residents also have a positive view of how the city's police handled the situation, but are much more critical of Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco, President George W. Bush, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Most residents are not offended by Nagin's recent statement that New Orleans should be rebuilt as a "chocolate city." A majority of residents also express confidence that the votes in the city's mayoral election in April will be accurately cast and counted, and half say they will definitely vote or might consider voting for Nagin.

The poll, conducted Feb. 18-26, interviewed a random sample of adults currently living in New Orleans. Respondents were contacted on landline telephones and cellular telephones, since many areas of the city still do not have working telephone service in their homes more than almost six months after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city.

Fifty-four percent of New Orleans residents say they approve of Nagin's response to the hurricane, and half say they approve of the New Orleans police.

How about if we poll the poor sons of bitches who were forced to flee New Orleans, which would be about 2/3 of the pre-Katrina population IIRC, and see what they think?

A majority of current New Orleans residents ...

well, of course ... those are the ones that were least affected or were resourceful enough to get themselves out of harm's way. I'll wager a sizeable number of them are silently thankful that Nagin's incompetence ended up cleaning out the riff-raff.

I won't post what I'm thinking - it would ruin the reputation of Freepers everywhere.

As I have said, think of New Orleans as you would the town drunk. Staggering around, bumping into walls, slurring his speech, asking for handouts but always, always denying he has any problem.

NOLA has to crash and burn and hit rock bottom before anything of significance changes

So many stupid people gathered together in one area.... What a waste of space. You know at one time back in the early 80's New Orleans was a place to go and have fun. In the late 90's it was like thug town and not so fun any more. You could actually get mugged by the cops. Only fools and stupid people would approve of that racist a-hole and reelect him....

I was taught that we get the government we deserve. All you had to do was to watch the chaos and the looting to realize that NOLA deserves the corrupt, incompetent and unconcerned city government it has.

Yeah, gotta keep solidarity with the brutha, even if there were no buses, and grandma drowned in her nursing home and the man did look like every stereotype of the black politician in the days during and directly after Katrina: incompetent, indecisive, insane.

He did, after all, promise to make it a Chocolate City, didn't he?

The mayor that drowned all his buses and trucks then blamed FEMA for not providing 1200 buses on demand?

The NOLA folks approve of that?

Well, at least his reelection is cinched. Wish that were the rubric for success applied to my current job!
