ISRA Press Release Cabela's Targeted by Latest Daley/Blagojevich Gun Control Scheme
SPRINGFIELD, Ill., Feb. 6 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The following was released today by the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA):
Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and Governor Rod Blagojevich have teamed up to push legislation designed to thwart plans by a major hunting/fishing retailer to open a superstore in suburban Chicago. The bill, HB4693, would make it nearly impossible for any law-abiding entity to engage in the lawful retail sale of firearms in the state.
Cabela's, based in Sidney, NE, recently announced plans to build a destination superstore in northwest suburban Hoffman Estates. The store would employ 400 people and feature a wide variety of gear to meet the needs of every outdoor sportsman. Of course, the retail sale of firearms would be a major component of the store's business.
Cabela's announcement comes at a time when Blagojevich and Daley are pulling out all stops end private firearm ownership in the state. Within recent weeks, their backers in the legislature have introduced several bills intended to suck the life out of the state's long standing heritage of safe and lawful firearm ownership. Included along with HB4693 is HB2414 -- a highly controversial bill that would ban gun collecting and competitive shooting.
"We feel bad for Cabela's and the people of Hoffman Estates," said ISRA Executive Director Richard Pearson. "The village has worked hard for 3 years to bring Cabela's to town. Just a few weeks ago, the village trustees voted unanimously to repeal the village's gun registration ordinance to facilitate Cabela's move. Hoffman Estates jumped ship, and Daley won't stand for that. Thus, we see the introduction of HB4693, which is a clear attempt to undo what the Hoffman Estates village trustees have accomplished. This is yet another example of Mayor Daley looking to extend his power and control beyond Chicago's city limits."
"If HB4693 passes into law, no businessperson in their right mind would want to go into, or even stay in, the retail firearms business," continued Pearson. "The fees, red tape, paperwork, and potential criminal liability associated with HB4693 would make the cost of compliance with the law unbearable. Already thin profit margins would be trimmed to near zero. It just wouldn't pay to stay in the retail firearms business -- and that's precisely the intent of this legislation."
"HB4693 and HB2414 constitute a double-pronged attack on lawful firearm ownership," said Pearson. "HB4693 would eliminate retail sales of firearms, and HB2414 would ban many, if not most of the firearms currently owned by law-abiding Illinois citizens. Of course, neither of these bills addresses the criminal use of firearms. But then again, Blagojevich and Daley are not about crime control, they're about banning guns."

The ISRA is the state's leading advocate of safe, lawful, and responsible firearms ownership. For more than a century, the ISRA has represented the interests of over 1.5 million law- abiding Illinois firearm owners.
American would have never forgiven Bill Clinton if it would have been Hillary rather than Monica that he was horn-dogging around with.
Tar and feathers. LONG over due...
All Illinois residents go to the NRA-ILA website and from there look up your reps and then email them or get their phone numbers and contact them that way.
I don't see a lot of Chi-Town denizens finding much to buy in Cabelas.
I could be wrong, but I seem to remember a large number of Downstaters who opened their arms to Blago and voted him in.
IMO the whole state is sick. Too many IL residents that call themselves (R) are very middle of the road and just don't seem to care anymore.
All of Chicago's Collar Counties are now no different then Cook. I wish I had the stones to move. Anyone hiring in South Dakota?
I do live in Illinois and I plan to join the Illinois State Rifle Association today.
The only one that comes to mind is U. S. Grant.
Fantastic idea, Squid. If you do receive such guidance, from the NRA or from lawyers, please be sure to post to the Banglist? Others of us who also are trapped in blue states would definitely follow your lead. Thanks.
These same idiots were against opening a walmart right outside of chicago also.. walmart does have its downsides, however, it will create jobs and tax revenue.
I have to buy some ammo from wally world this week....
I seem to recall the same but I don't trust my memory that much. I believe it arose from the George Ryan fiasco.
Blago does not have his base solidified and isn't that popular throughout the state. But thus far there's no one on the Republican side that stands out. My money is on Oberweis at this time. But I DO NOT want to see Topinka win the primary. That would be like going back to the Ryan era. No thanks!
Why would any freedom loving company want their sales tax contribution to go to fund those freedom hating Marxists anyway? They should locate on the Interstate about 1/4 mile into Indiana, and give IL residents a way to flip the IL legislature the bird on both the 2A infringements AND the sales tax! Actually, make that 2 miles across the state line, so the IL state troopers can't sit just inside IL, watch who goes into the store, and find some excuse to pull them over and search them when they drive back across the line.
Chicago Democratic Machine + Most people in Chicago couldn't care less about rights as long as the welfare and the cushy city jobs keep coming. I used to think NYC was the absolute worst place to live if you cared about your rights, but Chicago is trying to take first place.
Well, yeah, that's why he lives there! ;-)
Also Thomas Jefferson
Then you haven't been in Wisconsin on a weekend.
