It's Time to Put Muslim Holidays in US Calendars

Al-Jazeerah, February 25, 2006

Dear Muslims in America,

May I suggest that it is time you got yourselves established as part of the American Way of Life, and not people of a religion that belongs to ‘them’ and not to ‘us’.

I have been sending the following email to various calendar makers. You may like to do the same and get your holidays included in the 2007 calendars.

I have noticed that many calendars in the USA list the Christian and the Jewish holidays, but not the Muslim ones.

As there are now 8 million Muslims in the USA, exceeding the 6 million Jews, Islam is now the second most popular religion in the USA, after Christianity.

I feel that their holidays should also be included in the yearly calendars.

Here is the list of Muslim Holidays that could be included on 2007 calendars.

BTW, if you are wondering why the dates of the Muslim Holidays are 10 or 11 days earlier each year, it is because they follow the lunar year, which is about 355 days.

So the dates for 2007 will not work for 2008!

Look forward to hearing from you.

Jane Jewell,

No Jews, hardly any Christians, why bother.

Some notable Jewish holidays -- Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, Passover, Hanukkah -- show up often on Gregorian calendars. The reason, non-Jews often send Jewish friends greeting cards for those occasions.

Had to go look at a big calendar, and a few are there. So was Ramadan, along with a bunch of holidays I didn't know about. Shows you how important it is, I never noticed before.

All it takes is majority vote, right?

No.

Article V:

The Congress, whenever two thirds of both Houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose Amendments to this Constitution, or, on the Application of the Legislatures of two thirds of the several States, shall call a Convention for proposing Amendments, which, in either Case, shall be valid to all Intents and Purposes, as Part of this Constitution, when ratified by the Legislatures of three fourths of the several States, or by Conventions in three fourths thereof, as the one or the other Mode of Ratification may be proposed by the Congress; Provided that no Amendment which may be made prior to the Year One thousand eight hundred and eight shall in any Manner affect the first and fourth Clauses in the Ninth Section of the first Article; and that no State, without its Consent, shall be deprived of its equal Suffrage in the Senate.

In places with significant Christian populations, important Christian holidays are national holidays.

2-3% seems to be "significant enough" for many of these places.

It's time to take Muslim holidays off of Middle Eastern calendars and replace them with Christian ones.

Like it used to be.

Our "Christian" holidays are little more than pagan orgies--Saint Patrick's Day--or attempts to recreate holy days around animals, mythical figures, and general warm, fuzzy feelings replete with empty platitudes--like Easter and Christmas. They are not even given their due respect or observance. Instead, we have "Happy Holidays," while the calendar says "Christmas."

If an Islamic individual or group wants to put Muslim holidays on our calendar, they are dumber than we could have possibly anticipated. The same paganism that says it's quite all right to tell a child about the Easter Bunny (a lie) but not to tell them about Jesus Christ (the truth) will either overtake the Islamic holidays or reveal the true face of Islam.

Mind you, I'm not in favor of either one!

I can't say that I'm surprised. The churches (and their committees) that have abandoned the gospel of salvation for the gospel of social activism have done it again.

Am I being a bit too overdramatic or off-base in wondering how long it will take before some Episcopalian or United Methodist churches include Qur'an readings--mixed with the Bible--in their services?

LOL! Methinks you are spot on, and a little wicked. I 'ran over' to Prophet of Doom and came back with a few snippets:

Qur’an 4:159 “And there is none of the People of the Book but will believe in him (Jesus as only a messenger of Allah and a human being) before his (Jesus’) death. He will be a witness against them.”

Qur’an 5:77 “Say (Muhammad): ‘People of the Book, do not overstep the bounds in your religion, or follow the people who erred and led many astray. Cursed are the unbelievers among the Children of Israel by David and Jesus.... They do vile things, allying themselves with the infidels so that Allah’s indignation is upon them and in torment they will suffer for all eternity.”

[Another translation reads:] “Curses were pronounced on the unbelievers, the Children of Israel who rejected Islam, by the tongues of David and of Jesus because they disobeyed and rebelled.”

Qur’an 5:80 “You see many of them allying themselves with the unbelieving infidels. Vile indeed are their souls. Allah’s wrath is on them, and in torment will they abide.”

Qur’an 5:81 “If only they had believed in Allah, in the Prophet, and in what had been revealed to him.”

Chanukah, Purim, Passover,Yom Kippur are listed on many secular calenders to name a few. We have several secular calenders around the house from different places and have these holidays listed.

I've seen this, too. And my diocesan sponsored Catholic calendar also include several major Jewish holidays, too.

But I agree with post #18: When Muslims start putting Israel on their maps, I'll entertain the idea of putting their holidays on my calendar.
