I come late to this one, but I thought I'd add my two cents. There's been a bit of a dust up going on at the University of Washington. It's over a recent proposal to erect a monument there to honor Col. Greg "Pappy" Boyington. Col. Boyington was a Marine Corps pilot who commanded the "Black Sheep" squadron during some of the toughest fighting of World War II. He was credited with shooting down more than 20 Japanese aircraft before he, himself, was shot down and then spent almost two years as a prisoner of war. For his leadership, bravery and accomplishments in the war, he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. The uproar over the proposed monument came when the minutes of the Student Senate meeting were published and several statements made therein came to light. I'll not name the student senators making the following statements as, in the past week or so, they've already had their nonsense more than amply pointed out. I quote now from the minutes of the meeting: "XXXX questioned whether it was appropriate to honor a person who killed other people. She said she didn't believe a member of the Marine Corps was an example of the sort of person UW wanted to produce." "YYYY commented that many monuments at UW already commemorate rich white men."

Never hire a grad from this school - or Wisc, or Colo... A degree from such schools certifies you are an airhead.
Has anyone else heard that the student senators proposed a statue dedicated to Draft Dodgers? It was supposed to be a boy and girl in 60's period clothing running hand in hand. I don't recall the girls in High School worrying about having to register for the Draft.

Col. Greg "Pappy" Boyington by his own admission is an SOB. I can confirm that he is correct! As a 12 year old I managed to scrimp and save to attend a Confederate Air Force show in Harlingen Texas. He was there and has always been one of my Heros. I stood in line and tried to get his autograph on a Poster of an F4U Corsair. I got to the head of the line and he not so politley told me to bugger off! Unless I bought his book he wasn't signing anything...
When your Heros fall they fall hard!
All that said he is still one of my Heros ;-)
At this point it would be an insult to Col. Boyington to have his statue there.
I'm having a little a little trouble digesting this one. Pappy wasn't drunk, was he? He did have a reputation as having a drinking problem, you know.

Yep it happened. Summer 1982. He was setup outside the hanger at Harlingen AFB where they had the retail sales area inside it of it for memorbilia. They also a bunch of Nose Art there too. I remember as a young kid I was interested in that! Waited for over an hour and a half.
Not a clue. I was in front of him for maybe 15 seconds. I was so crestfallen I don't know.
On the upside I managed to get the ENTIRE crew of B-17 Enola Gay to sign my B17 poster. Including the pilot Paul Tibbets. So I didn't go away empty handed.
I will eat a little crow on that, I definitely worded that poorly. I live in Washington and am too used to hearing of this type of reaction from students. And I ignored the fact that many conservative students are starting to fight back.
All I can say is that I'm sorry for your bad experience. I would've thought better of him.

Wow, just WOW! I would trade my friends ride on Sentimental Journey (luck of the draw in his case, she was in Fort Worth for an air show....they asked for volunteers for crying out loud!!!!!) for that poster.....:)
