Vice President Dick Cheney is expected to retire within a year.

Senior GOP sources envision the retirement of Mr. Cheney in 2007, months after the congressional elections. The sources said Mr. Cheney would be persuaded to step down as he becomes an increasing political liability to President Bush.

The sources reported a growing rift between the president and vice president as well as their staffs. They cited Mr. Cheney's failure to immediately tell the president of the accidental shooting of the vice president's hunting colleague earlier this month. The White House didn't learn of the incident until 18 hours later.

And that is the best reason for him to do so. The party needs a line of succession and since Cheney is not going to be the one there should be someone else. Not like Cheney has to leave the administration or be put out to pasture. And, frankly he is pretty good with conservatives on the campaign trail and they could use some campaign attention.

Condi as VP!!!!.......(hope)..... Nah, commissioner of the NFL. It is more her league. She has shown herself to be a rank amateur in the Middle East - either that or she is a Israel-hater.

Sure, and it will be the VP who suggests the Jan 2007 retirement.
He's more interested in victory than in himself.
Halliburton will be too busy getting the Persian Sea Oilfields up and running.

Calhoun was stridently oppossed to Jackson's policies though. A little bit of a difference here.

Dick Cheney was elected to the office of VP, and we deserve to get the whole four years.....he better not be backing out now, and I don't think he is.

Right, but my point was that it's been a long time since a vp resigned voluntarily.

If Cheney is unwilling to run then he should stand down now.

I would vote for him in a second, he is a truly great man, IMO.

The only thing that gives me a momentary pause is the polarization effect that his run would cause; imagine a Cheney vs. the beast race in 2008...

We need a back bencher with gravitas, stature, and attitude.

Conservative would also be a good trait, not that one would ever make it to (or through) the convention.

politics aside, I want Condi in this scenario simply for the fun of watching Democrats heads explode...

Imagine, White Liberal Elitist lining up in lock step to vote against a qualified Black Woman!

Black Democrats will finally see the true face of the Democrat Elite...
Teddy will be drunk and stammering, Fineswine/Boxer/Clinton will be full of righteous indignation that the first woman VP is a, gasp, Republican....That's compelling television.

It may happen (10% chance) but the reasons wont be from "strained" relations.

Some wishful thinking on somebody part here. I believe this is just some reporter's fantasy. Slow news room day, I guess, time to make up a story and hoepfully get noticed.

The Secret Service knew it. The President knew it. The author isn't seriously suggesting the Pres didn't know it until he read it in the Slimes, is he?
