I asked Thompson once on radio program why no military service: most men his age served. He didn't like the question and he didn't give an answer.

Wrong. KWIK (AM 1240) in Pocatello had ABC News as part of the Clear Channel lineup. Paul Harvey is part of the daily mix too. When Clear Channel switched to Fox News, the Paul Harvey segments remained.
Most men his age got college deferments. Those that didn't were subject to a lottery.
It was a very unpopular war. Some returning vets were spat upon. It was ugly.
That is a spring chicken next to John McCain.
He has stated that given the climate he would investigate the possibility of running. He is not at all too old. I personally would love to see him on the lower half of a ticket featuring Rep. Tom Tancredo.
No one can replace Paul Harvey. (I thought he was preparing his son to take over?)
