Actually, this is "Black Jack, MO," which is in St. Louis county. It's on the other side of the state from Lone Jack.

They aren't parents. Parents are married.

Gee, that would certainly be a surprise to a friend of mine, who believes that she's a parent to a daughter. Tell me, did she stop being a parent when her husband died? I also know of at least three other of these "former" parents, due to a divorce. And one woman who had a child out of wedlock altogether. She's not a parent either?

Didn't the Alabama Supreme Court allow the state (or a city) to ban them all together?

Yup! Heck, the state of Missouri once banned ALL sex!

We've only had one ummarried couple move into the neighborhood. Both are on the HOA.

We've had several college kids move in. Oddly, you rarely encounter unmarried couples where homes average $350k. You do get college kids because they are paying about $600 a month in rent in town. Why not get a 4 bedroom house in a nice neighborhood for that instead of a ratty apartment?

It is if they came from a state that does, or even if they lived in such a state for a very brief time(e.g., if they moved from TX to Missouri).

Only a few states recognize "common law marriage." It's generally not a moral issue, but a legal one, as is the objection here. Due to all the property disputable issues (if the break up) couples living together unmarried are a legal nightmare for the state...

"Some people do not believe in marriage, some people are not Christians and don't have your beliefs and don't give a crap what you believe in. "

They won't be living in BlackJack either, apparently...LOL

The woman stated how much they loved the area. The area is the way it is because there are rules that others have followed. If they don't like those rules and are unwilling to change their marital status, then they should find a neighborhood that will accept them for who they are....NOT move into a community and try to change their rules. It appears they are just a couple of sh*t disturbers to me.

Then have the ordinance against the disruptive behaviour, not against anyone who might possibly become guilty of it.

I glad to see someone correct the Lone Jack info.

Black Jack is in northeast St. Louis County

They have been together 13 years...that's better than most marriages are lasting lately!

Oh come on, obviously there are exceptions.

What I mean is that somebody who never gets married in the first place does not deserve to be called a parent.

The woman who did not have a child within marriage would be a parent...if she is doing it alone without some live-in boyfriend.

Common law marriage is largely a thing of myth. 15 states currently recognize limited common law marriages, of those 4 only recognize common law marriages that have been grandfathered in while no new ones are created, 1 only recognizes them for inheritence purposes.

Of the remaining states the requirements are so akin to marriage that it isn't even funny. In Texas, in order to be recognized as a common law marriage you must: must sign a form provided by the county clerk. In addition, they must (1) agree to be married, (2) cohabit, and (3) represent to others that they are married.

Thank you for saying that. It's obvious to those of us in that situation, but we sure suffer persecution for our choices to leave a bad marriage.
