STILLWELL: San Francisco on Fox News: An embarrassment of riches
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 2/23/6 | Cinnamon Stillwell

Last week was an eventful one for San Francisco politicians on Fox News.

On Tuesday night, Supervisor Gerardo Sandoval was a guest on the Fox News program "Hannity and Colmes." Broadcasting live from San Francisco, Sean Hannity interviewed Sandoval about the ongoing controversy surrounding the USS Iowa.

As reported in this column last August, the Board of Supervisors voted 3-8 against docking the WWII-era Iowa as a floating museum at the Port of San Francisco. The decision was made despite the potential financial benefits to the city and the efforts of veterans groups, a Congressional delegation and Senator Dianne Feinstein to bring the Iowa to San Francisco.

Predictably, Sandoval defended the Board of Supervisors' decision and in the process, made a complete fool of himself. Not only did Sandoval stick to his pacifist principles by rejecting the icky display of WWII wartime heroism in the pristine San Francisco Bay, but he announced that the United States should have no military whatsoever. "The United States should not have a military," was how he put it.

When asked by an incredulous Hannity who would then protect the country, Sandoval responded that "the cops" and "the Coast Guard" could do the job. He must have forgotten that the police force is otherwise occupied and that the Coast Guard is part of the U.S. military he so abhors.

Even Hannity's liberal co-host Alan Colmes was aghast at Sandoval's bizarre proclamation and made sure to distance himself and (in his words) the Democratic Party from such fringe politics. Indeed, if there was anything Sandoval succeeded in doing with his appearance on Fox News, it was in exposing further how utterly out of touch San Francisco politics are with

I like your idea about all the delegates staying outside the city. There are plenty of hotels that can easily be reached by BART, and the city would not get the hotel tax.

I saw the interview and I wasn't shocked at all. I was mildly surprised he'd admit it, but the Left are idiots...they elect idiots too...clearly.

We need to make Gerardo Sandoval the face of the Democratic Party.

One of my favorite San Francicko moments was several years back when BRAC was doing a rouind of base closings. Targeted for closing was the Presidio (an Army facility) in San Fransicko.

The Presidio is in Nancy Pelosi's district. Pelosi has long been one of the more strident anti-military members of Congress. it shows in her comments and voting record. But when she found out the Presidio was on the list, she flipped out.

I watched her give a long, drawn-out and emotional appeal as to why the Presidio shouldn't be closed. I was amazed at her "conversion" to being "pro-military". it was disgusting to watch actually.

I live 100 miles from San Francisco. When I go there on business, my last task is to throw out all the trash in my car. MacDonald's wrappers, dental floss, Pepsi bottles, used Kleenex, etc..all into the street. And do you know what?? It doesn't make any difference!! The street was full of garbage already!!

..all into the street.

Congratulations. That put you on the very long list of San Francisco's problems.

Thank you. I hope to do more in the future. Before 'Frisco can be healed, it must be torn down. Then it can be reborn.
