I have no dog in the fight either. Other than being an American. I'm non union, never have been union.
If the balance of power shifts to employers, employers will grow more and more abusive. Without unions funding lobbys, laws will change. Eventually working conditions will come to a point where some intervention would be needed.

Sorry about that-- you were bringing to mind fond memories of my younger days working through college by playing guitar in a redneck bar. What I remember is by 2pm Sat. night all the customers were either in a fight or in love. Some of those clowns tried picking fights with me (some how it always seemed like it was some short guy, maybe desperate to prove something) but I was at work and always too busy. Shortie usually found what he was looking for elsewhere.
I take it that by asking me to talk about my experiences that you have none.
But the ports in NY/NJ have had corruption problems for decades whether the leaseholders were foreign or domestic.
The longshoremen in our area are definitely mobbed-up - the entire Sopranos TV series rings so true to NJ residents precisely because it centers on "The Esplanade" - a fictional urban renewal project in Newark, NJ which involves graft for government construction contracts, trucking business and shipping.
Jon Corzine's problem with honesty and graft is on full display in "When Genius Failed" - the excellent book about the collapse of LTCM.
That's called collusion, or price-fixing, and is considered illegal and immoral in every other scenario. And with good reason.

Kushner was the commissioner of the NY/NJ Port Authority. Kushner is the one that sponsored Golen Cipel, an foreign national, that was put in charge of NJ's homeland security.
BTW, I've been in a union and I've been menaced by union thugs for holding a nonunion position in the past.

Right, and I'll add that we need unions; they're necessary for capitalism to be able to function.
Most of the discussion has been about how bad unions are, and I might have had a lower opinion of unions too if I'd have believed the title that started all this: "Longshoreman Threatens the Host (Rush Limbaugh)". Since I now know that it's not true, this thread has given me a lower opinion of union critics-- sometimes they say things that aren't true.

I would be amazed to find out that Rush is not a union member, himself. However, the entertainment unions do not have the same reps as longshoremen.

FreeRepublic actually draws a lot of the same kind of people who call Rush with "I'm a lifelong Republican . . . " lead-ins and then proceed to bash President Bush and/or the social conservatives for hijacking the GOP and restricting their so-called liberties. These Freepers are often belligerent, as Rush's caller was in the original post in this thread. I was not surprised at all that Hildy admired the guy.
That means they are merely a version of the "seminar caller"!

Our unions are run by criminals. Maybe you are defending the princeple of a union. But the unions we are speaking of are run by the mafia and socialist supports.

Define it in any way you choose and judge it however you choose. I don't really care what you think unless you try to force your beliefs on me. And with good reason.
Workers have a right to try to improve their position, within the bounds of the law, and employers have the right to tell them where to get off, again within the bounds of laws. As to morality, I doubt that you or I can be subjective in saying what is moral.
That doesn't mean we can't try, or that we won't come off as indignant when we fail.
