I think it is less a case being wrong in principle than of being wrong in application. There is nothing inherently wrong with workers banding together to give them clout. The problem lies in the union leadership. Too many union bosses are gangsters or communists, or both. Too many unions operations are based upon venality or driven by an agenda, or both. The UAE scandal involves both. I've been a steward and hold withdrawal cards for two other unions. Never again if I can help it.

There is nothing inherently wrong with workers banding together to give them clout.That's called collusion, or price-fixing, and is considered illegal and immoral in every other scenario. And with good reason.

BTW, I've been in a union and I've been menaced by union thugs for holding a nonunion position in the past.
