If I never hear another "We're closing in on bin Laden" claim, it will be fine with me. Tell me when we've CAUGHT him, not when we're "close" to catching him. "The one that got away" is never as entertaining a story for the listeners as for the teller.

At the same time, it said, al-Qaeda was showing signs of moving away from destruction towards more "earthly" political aims, meaning talks might be possible with their successors.

NO! There is never going to be a time that we will EVER talk to Al Qaeda. Their only option is to be captured or die. Stupid british wishful thinking.

There seems to be a proliferation of these soothsayers for profit, like Debka, Stratfor and now Aegis. Using this so-called internet data-mining technique results in some very specific predictions, which are wildly inaccurate, but fun to read anyhow.

If they're gonna do fortune telling - they may's well dispense with the data mining mumbo jumbo and go straight to the time-honored crystal ball.

One of the more famous online "crystal ball" fortune tellers has accurately predicted the most recent terrorist act in Bali (named the target and the street), the death of Sharon due to failing health, the election of Merkel, muslim riots in Paris, Denmark and Holland, relaunch of the space shuttle along with in-orbit problems, floods in Europe and exceptionally cold winter, the mass beachings of whales and dolphins in Australia (mentioned as a time mark for other events), and the election of the Islamonutcase Ahmadinejad among many, many others.

But what good is all that? That's all in the past. And I could point readers to the time-marked stamps where he made those predictions - but that's no fun. Instead, it should be a hoot to post predictions here and refer back to them as they may or may not happen - and to compare them with the expensive predictions of the infinitely more "respectable" data miners.

Here are predictions that haven't happened yet, in no particular order of date or importance:

1.9/11 type terrorist attack in Chicago

2. war between Israel and Iran, missile attacks and terrorist bombings throughout Israel, Israel retaliates by air - does NOT go nuclear. Unclear whether US is directly involved. Israel also attacked from the Mediterranean (Iranian subs? - my ruminations)

3. US invasion of Syria. Iranian attacks US forces in southern Iraq right afterwards.

4. Execution of Saddam by firing squad. Saddam waives the blindfold - makes speech on worldwide TV and sets off global jihad. Russia and China ally themselves with the jihadists. Riots spread throughout all parts of Europe.

5. Massive epidemic in the US - allied countries assist in the control of the widespread epidemic. Unclear whether this is bird flu or not.

6. Global financial collapse - breakdown of civil order in the US but no civil war.

7. Bush takes third term under martial law, follow-on President from Colorado in 2011 or 2012.

8. North Korea fires nukes and is wiped out in return. China takes Taiwan and nukes Japan.

9. Major Tsunami in Brazil - hitting the Rio De Janeiro region. Warning is sufficient.

10. Major terrorist attack in Thailand during a festival where the "lady boys" congregate. (Sounds like Phuket to me)

11. Assorted earthquakes around the world...

12. Scandinavian countries form an alliance and close the border with Russia after a train terrorist event in Helsinki.

13. Russia under Putin sides with Iran and jihad in order to recapture lost Soviet empire. Later Russia switches sides and allies with the West.

14. Massive flooding in Holland in 2006 as the sea defeats the dikes.

15. Greece and Turkey go at it again.

There's a boatload more, and a lot of it gets really woo-wooh...out there. But who cares? Call him a saint, a devil or just an acidhead that hit a future Reuters tickertape, but if his predictions continue to track, I'll be watching for future predicted events and preparing accordingly, and save my money on Debka, Stratfor and the like.

I don't agree. The public of the East and the public of the West want a war; regardless of the politicians.

I remain nuetral... except I want a beach home on the Straits of Hormuz to butcher pigs for ham sandwiches and have large feast during the daytime during the fall.

Well now it looks we really could have civil war in Iraq as a bunch of Sunni mosques are being targeted in retaliation for the massive bombing of the very major Shiite mosque in Sammara. Wonder if it is Al Queda, Iran, or home grown terrorists. I hope they find out soon becaus it is really getting scary.

I'll belive it when Osama bin Hidin' is hanging from a gibbet in front of City Hall in New York, with passers-by 'donating' $10 to charity to beat him with a stick with at least three rusty nails driven through it.

I'll believe it when, after every NY'er has a chance to beat him to death, his body is coasted in bacon grease and set alight on Pay-per-View.

I'll believe it when, after the bacon grease flambe, his noxios ashes are sold to the highest-bidder for use as an additive to kitty litter.

I'll be ecstatic when said kitty litter is used in the carnivore habitat at the Bronx Zoo and the mixture is collected in a plastic container bearing the Israeli flag, and air-dropped on Mecca. Preferably on the "Prophet's" tom, during the hieght of the Haj.

Until that day, I expect he's more likely to give Katie Couric an "exclusive" interview before he's actually captured or killed.

Ah, to dream...
