President Bush called reporters at about 2.30 ET aboard Air Force One to issue a very strong defense of port deal... MORE... He said he would veto any legislation to hold up deal and warned the United States was sending 'mixed signals' by going after a company from the Middle East when nothing was said when a British company was in charge... Lawmakers, he said, must 'step up and explain why a Middle Eastern company is held to a different standard.' Bush was very forceful when he delivered the statement... 'I don't view it as a political fight,' Bush said.... DEVELOPING...

Secular government. The government in UAE is SECULAR, not Islamic.

See post #88. These are some of the people mentioned in charge of their "secular government/society". If they are not ruling under radical Islam, why are they all so ticked off over the Muhammed cartoons?

Al Qaeda's Gold: Following Trail to Dubai

http://www.globalpolicy.org/nations/corrupt/2002/0218gold.htm

"Dubai's links to suspected terrorist financing and money laundering have long been a point of contention between the United States and the United Arab Emirates. "There is no question the UAE was used by terrorists, the question is why," a U.S. official said. "It is no more lax and unregulated than many places. The answer is, Dubai is so damn convenient."

Regardless of the outcome I am very happy that the democrats have finally had to accept profiling and that there is an actual war taking place. Let them bask in the limelight of being regarded as racist

Harriet Miers' nomination was a proven bad decision that could have done a lot of damage, but most of it over a long period of time; not necessarily immediately or within the very near future. This is a bad decision with potentially devastating effects, beginning now (politically) and continuing on from here.

I really have no problem with P&O, the British are true allies, Moslems are a whole different deal.

"There is no question the UAE was used by terrorists, the question is why,"

Our country "was" used by terrorists. Many countries "were" used by terrorists.

"The other 2 are Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. Doe's that fact mean anything?"

Mushareff, I think, has tried to step up, as best he personally can do after 9/11. It is well known and not disputed that the Taliban had their strongest support from corrupt elements within the Pak Secret Service (ISI, whatever it's called, like their CIA). This is why we bombed a house with a dozen plus people in it, in Pakistan the other day, killed some bad guys and some innocents, and Mushareff said: that wasn't so great. But he didn't throw out the ambassador or anything.

As for the Saudis, come on, do you really even have to ask? Let's outsource (insource) the rebuilding of the WTC to Bin Laden Construction International! Why not, they are a fine, established company, they do great work, and they really have nothing to do with that black sleep Osama.

Are you apologists for this getting it yet?

Bush, fearless leader of the WOT, hands over management, or even just PROFIT from management, of the major ports in the US to a Muslim Monarchy. That's the least of it, the very least. And he's not going to be seen as a butt boy to the Emirs? PUH-LEEZE.

He should have dug in his heels over Harriet Meiers, there would have been more dignity available there.

Maybe you all think these Arab business guys are just fine, just like the Brit Business Guys, the German business guys, etc. etc.

I don't really think that.

Sorry for the temper, but I'm sitting here, in Hudson County, NJ with a major port on each side and knee deep in illegals from the Middle East. Do I trust them? No. Do I trust Bush? If he actually breaks out the veto pen for this I'll be ready to believe every lie Micheal Moore ever told, at least those will SEEM to make sense.

To solve this problem, this Dubai company needs to open one office in Africa.
All mail, correspondence and dialog via Africa and no more problems with rejection.

Just think about what you're saying, though. If the British are "true allies" and P&O is a British company, wouldn't the fact that the British government officially supports this sale to the UAE company raise some concern in your mind?

"If you like Dubai so much, maybe you should go live there. Of course, if you're not a Muslim, you'll have to abandon your religion. If you don't like the King (sheik, emir, whatever) you won't be able to say so. But, if clean and modern is what you crave, go for it."

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about and forfeit all credibility on the matter. There are several Christian churches that operate freely in the UAE. The UAE is a federation of seven emirates. It doesn't have a king, or an emir. It has a president. It is a federal republic with its own constitution.

Honestly, the gross ignorance demonstrated on these threads by the people screaming the loudest really is a discredit to FreeRepublic.

"Making them economically stable" was not the strategy which stopped the Japanese and Germans from blowing up Americans during the second world war - nor was it the strategy which led to the downfall of Communism in Eastern Europe. Why do you think it will work in this instance?"

Because it absolutely WAS the strategy after the second world war. And it has worked perfectly.
