Senate Republican Leader Bill Frist called Tuesday for the Bush administration to stop a deal permitting a United Arab Emirates company to take over six major U.S. seaports, upping the ante on a fight that several congressmen, governors and mayors are waging with the White House.
"The decision to finalize this deal should be put on hold until the administration conducts a more extensive review of this matter," said Frist. "If the administration cannot delay this process, I plan on introducing legislation to ensure that the deal is placed on hold until this decision gets a more thorough review."
In the uneasy climate after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the Bush administration decision to allow the transaction is threatening to develop a major political headache for the White House.
"I'm not against foreign ownership," said Frist, "but my main concern is national security." He was speaking to reporters in Long Beach, Calif., where Frist was doing a fact-finding tour on port security and immigration issues.

Ok, I have seen your post on several of these threads and you keep saying the story is a lie but fail to mention particulars. Maybe you could be more specific for those of us who haven't jumped on the bandwagon yet either way. I would like to know A:)Just what does this deal entail? How much control over the ports would the Arabs have? B:) What about the story is a lie, EXACTLY, not a vauge it's a lie scenario but particulars, Please. Thanks.
Gee curious if any of the hysteric about the Port Deal bothered to note there are NO US Company's that do this function and when this deal goes thru the Brits will have sold off THEIR last company that does this. Who is going to be acceptable to the panic stricken? The company run by the Chinese? Emotional hysteric is long on this story, rational discussion of the facts almost nonexistent
Please explain to us "Conservatives" why the same company that has over seen, for decades, the LOADING of many of the 9,000,000 containers SHIPPED to the USA each year is suddenly UNACCEPTABLE to oversee UNloading of these same containers at 6 US Ports?
Because the same federal clowns are in charge of ports and borders. It is not comforting to know that inept yes-men are dictating policy. DHS is an abject failure.
It is called checks and balances.
Sorry, I was quoting MNJohnnie. He was posting the same diatribe on every thread related to this issue.
My view is it would be foolish to turn over the operation of any U.S. port to a company owned by any Islamic country. I fully understand and mostly support the notion of free markets, but there are some instances where practical common sense trumps theoretical lofty principle.
That's curious rationale. We can't find anyone else to do it so let's give it to anyone who wants it. I like that approach to matters involving security. A new take on an old rationalization. Muslims, doing the jobs Americans don't want.
Its a good one.
Thank you Senator Frist!!!! You are showing the kind of courage needed to protect our country on this imporatant violation of our nations borders (via port management). I wish our President could stop straddling fences. It _is_ America first or get off the podium.
you mean the article, not the plan-- right? :)
Well, why? I mean, people aren't running in the streets yelling "Dubaaaiiii, Dubaaaaiii" and leaving their homes with guns for hidden hideouts nor dialing 911 in rapid succession as if there were Dubai Zombies outside their windows.
The issues will come out soon in full array and until then, the public wants to know what those are. Just because hundreds of thousands of comments nationwide are being made does not mean there is hysteria present, just intensity and a very large population with ability to vocalize their concerns.
Was that an actual quote, or were you just channeling MNjohnnie?
If it's the latter, good job - you got the random capitialization and quote marks down pat!
Calling concern by a large number of people "hysteria" is, in and of itself, a hysterical reaction, as is labelling the underlings who are asking questions about the issue "hysterical" also a hysterical act.
Fine. I'm hysterical, too. I'm such a conformist!
Sorry, I have no idea how that happened!
At least that is what I heard the President say yesterday. Somebody had better give some of these advisers a clue. I am about as anti border fence as you will find. But I do see truckloads of human beings and poison smuggled into our country- every day- and the pat answer is that Mexico needs to do more on their side. CBP is the most corrupt organization in existence.
