NEW YORK, Feb. 20 As more and more children grow obese eating fatty foods saturated with sugar, consumer advocates battling to curb marketing by food companies are threatening to use their big guns: lawsuits and bad press.
And it appears to be working.
Although no lawsuits have been filed, the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) is talking with Kellogg and representatives for soft drink companies -- including Coca-Cola Co. and PepsiCo Inc. -- about the way they sell products to children, CSPI lawyer Stephen Gardner said. ''Unfortunately, many food companies maximize their profits by pitching junk foods to kids,'' Richard Daynard, a law professor at Northeastern University in Boston, said via e-mail while abroad. ''Selling sugared soft drinks in schools is a good example. Asking them nicely to stop hasn't worked. Only the threat of litigation, which threatens their benign public image and their bottom line, really gets their attention.'' Daynard is also a long-time critic of tobacco companies and their marketing practices.

All the usual suspects, CSPI, Daynard, and RWJF all show up once again.
All the usual suspects PING.........
Anyone wanting on or off my smoking/nanny statist do-gooders ping list let me know.
I don't remember if you are on my list, but thought you might be intereted in this........
Are these little people the ones actually purchasing the cereal? Not hardly, it's their parents that are. Just because Timmy or Suzy see it on TV and want it doesn't mean they are going to get it. It's the parents' job to decide what food will or will not make it to their cupboards and refrigerator and that's the way it should be.
And the kids run right out and buy like mindless lemmings right after payday.
It's amazing what physical activity will do for a kid's waist line.
Don't be fooled by this Leftist garbage. It's all about "lawyers" and money. Extortion. Nothing more.
Yes that is the way it should be, but these people believe they know better than parents how to do the job.
Love the name of your pinglist! Please add me. :)
Big Sugar and Multinational Agri-Business is to blame for my muffin tops..........
That line is practically verbatim of what this busybody claimed about tobacco companies.
As we all keep saying, smoking and tobacco are just the entry way into the small select group of "we know better than you" crowd dictating what society may and may not do.
If you want your kids healthier, feed them better at home and get them active, physically.
Sometimes I wish my kid would do a little LESS physical activity :) She's only 7, but eats us out of house and because she is always on the go.....and she's skinny as a rail.
Sooo...when it the class action lawsuit against bastions of 'higher education' due to start?
We've been warning fat people that they were next for years. But they didn't listen. Smokers, sit back and smile as the statists find their next cash cow in the obese.
"Under threat of legal action, Aunt Jemima promised to change labels to make it clearer that blueberries in its waffles were imitation, made from ingredients such as maltic acid, soy protein concentrate and salt."
Awe, Man! When Aunt Jemima caves, you know all is lost. ;)
You know, they make it sound as if we force-feed our kids Twinkies, Wonder Bread, high-octane milk and refined sugar. Let the parents decide.
If someone is uneducated about nutrition to begin with, putting more data on a convenience food package is going to result in...what, exactly?
What are these people trying to accomplish? Couldn't they spend their time and money designing nutrition programs or something for low-income people? (Yes, I know...it's all about harrassing successful food companies in the guise of doing it "For The Children!")
There's money in it, so they will not stop until changes are made about our litigious society. These people are actually a serious danger to our society.
Your on it...........I thought the idea would appeal to you!!!!
