(AP) A 62-year-old great-grandmother has become one of the oldest women in the world to successfully give birth.
The healthy six-pound, nine-ounce baby boy is the 12th child born to Janise Wulf of Redding, California. Wulf also has 20 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Her oldest child is 40.
Family members said Friday's delivery went smoothly, despite health concerns involving Wulf, who has diabetes and has been blind since birth.
Baby Adam is the second child born to Wulf and third husband, Scott. Their other son is three-and-a-half. Scott Wulf, who is 48 years old, said he'd always wanted children. He said their two sons, born through in-vitro fertilization, are beyond what he'd hoped was possible.
Wulf isn't the oldest woman to give birth. That record went to a Romanian woman who gave birth last year at the age of 66.

Even if she passes on before the kid reaches adulthood
And there's a good chance she won't. Life expectancy is increasing, new medical advances are made every year - there's a good possibility she can see this kid graduate from college, maybe even live to see this kid's child.
Situations like this are going to become more common. Women who've postponed child-birth into their 40s and 50s to pursue a career can and probably will pursue the options medical science keeps opening up to them - and good for them.

Poor kid. The childs mother will die when he is in his teens or early twenties Like they (the parents) give a hoot about the child they create. No, this is about their DESIRE for a child.
The actual life the kid will have is secondary. I mean, jeeze, the who are you kidding? The daily life and soon to be sorrow is something you should take into consideration versus your personal wants? How last decades!
Not as bad as people who pay megabucks to create a child just so they can see themeselves in a megalomaniac mirror, but close.

My local paper ran a story about a family with five living generations. Newborn baby, mom 20, grandma 41, greatgrandma 70, great-greatgrandma 93.

This is a delayed reaction version of having Nannies and other strangers raising kids. The hell with the kid, the "fulfillment" of the mom is all that matters.

How is this "selfishness"? The woman and her husband could be the greatest parents in the world for all you know.

How is this "selfishness"? The woman and her husband could be the greatest parents in the world for all you know. So could a gay couple. Or a self-decided single mom.
The numbers say they will die when the child is young. And that they will be unable to take care of the child properly.
The kid can look forward to taking care of Mom and Dad when he/she should be just building his/her life.
But that is irrelevant, so long as Mom and Dad are fulfilled for the 10-15 years before the kid has to deal with their Altzheimers/Senility/etc.

So they could. And?

Nonsense. The numbers say the mother is 62 - and plenty of women at 62 will live to be 82 or 92 or 102. There is no reason that a physically fit woman of 62 can't raise a child and unless you define "young" as 30 or 40, there's no reason to believe that she'll die when the child is young.
The father is apparently in his 40s, BTW.
To: freedumb2003
There are 11 other siblings/half-siblings though, all 40 and younger, and her husband is a younger man as well. I would be more in agreement if this was an only child of 60-something parents; that would be a tremendous burden.

That you toss this off so lightly, despite the fact that children in these situations have, overall, a horrible life, tells me you agree that it is OK to bring kids into hellish situations, just so long as the parent(sometime s) are "happy.

And of course, she will be perfectly healthy and not require the poor child to spend his/her entire life supporting the parent.
60 may be the new 50 but 80 is not the new 60.
Poor kid. Instead of living his/her life for him/her self, he/she will live for Mom and Dad. I know every parent wants this.
Selfishness, the Baby Boomer Generation is thy name.

Only 7 kids in my family and we were all by immaculate conception. My mother never had sex and if she did, it was only because she had to and she didn't like it!!!

You are so very, very lucky.
I have an Aunt who had 11 children. Life was always interesting at their house.

That you believe that children in these situations automatically have horrible lives tells me that you know very few children in these situations, and nevertheless feel qualified to pass judgement.

I agree Ruth----some people in here are very shallow. I second that!!! For a 62 year old to be having children is about as self centered as one can get. Shallow, shallow, shallow...
