February 19, 2006 -- A Virginia Congressman is trying for the fourth time to outlaw most forms of Internet gambling.

Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) reintroduced the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act last week, in hopes of wiping out what has become a $12 billion a year industry — off-shore casinos taking bets from Americans.

your government is desparately afraid that someone, somewhere, is having a good time.

They government doesn't so much care that some one is having a good time, rather, they care that some one is having a good time and the government isn't getting a piece of the take.

Ugh.... how disappointing to see (R) after his name.

How does he expect to stop this? Using Chinese internet blocking technology?

I'll lay 5-2 against this happening.

This isn't nannystate-ism. How the hell are you going to gamble on line without knowing that the game isn't rigged?

When you roll dice, the dice are regulated. When you play cards, the cards are regulated. If they aren't people go to jail.

How do you know the "poker" game you're playing isn't programmed to screw you?

This time the luddites have it right.

I'll bet that if it does pass, they can't enforce it.

Gee, I wonder how our-rulers-who-art-in-Malfunction Junction can find time away from THEIR back-room poker games to discuss such a weighty issue. And that includes the Supremes who, rumor has it, are nearly ALL poker players now.

The Brits have it legalized and heavily regulate it. Probably less crooked than your typical Indian casino.

Son, there's a reason they say that a fool and his money are soon parted.

'Cause if this doesn't part them, something else will.

Life isn't safe.

And don't forget who runs the biggest game of all (ever bought a lottery ticket?)

It's too hard to tax it, so just ban it.

Hey while he's at it, how about outlawing spam? That would stop them both I'm sure.

I buy a lottery ticket the same reason I like looking at Kirsten Dunst -- not likely I'll get any of that but it's fun to fantasize about.

Caveat emptor. We don't need another ridiculous law to ignore while it protects us from ourselves.

We could close every state legislature for the next decade and experience a vast improvement in the quality of life.

I have played plenty of online poker. I have tracked my premium hands and have realized that the results online statistically different than a 'live' game. The software they use is rigged to increase action and pot size to increase the rake for the website. There is no formal regulatory body for the online poker rooms, therefore there is no third party to audit or review the site's veracity. If they cannot come under the same scrutiny as a brick and mortar casino or lottery drawing and they are based in some 3rd world country, then yes they should be banned.

Anyone with on-line access to his stockbroker can buy put warrants on Yen futures; or buy options on dot.com stocks; or play commodities from copper to soybeans to pork bellies; and so on. Heck, get a second mortgage, and use the funds to short cocoa futures on margin, on your credit card.

Anyone disposed to risk-taking will find a way to take risks.
