The Bush administration will reverse its decision to allow a Dubai company based in the United Arab Emirates to gain control over several key U.S. ports, the Fox News Channel's Brit Hume predicted on Sunday.
"I don't think the administration will be able to sustain this," Hume told "Fox News Sunday." "I think it will have to reverse itself in some way or create some entity that stands between the company and the management of the ports."
"I just don't think [the decision] can stand," he added. "It doesn't sound good to let some Arab shieks to be in charge of our ports - that's what it comes down to."
Appearing on the same program, Sen. Lindsey Graham slammed the ports decision, saying, "It's unbelievably tone deaf politically at this point in our history, four years after 9/11, to entertain the idea of turning port security over to a company based in the U.A.E., who avows to destroy Israel."
In a decision announced last week, the Bush administration's Committee on Foreign Investment approved the purchase of six major U.S. ports by the U.A.E.-based Dubai Ports World.
The move set off a firestorm of criticism, with skeptics complaining that banks in the U.A.E. have helped launder money for terrorists and that the country itself was home to Marwan al Shehhi, the Sept. 11 hijacker who piloted United Airlines Flight 175 into Tower 2 of the World Trade Center.
On Friday, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice defended the Dubai deal, telling a Mideast news outlet: "There was a thorough review. It was decided that this could be done and done safely."
Stellar, check DoughtOne's post 105!
I am tired of the 'Bots drinking Industrial Strength Kool-Aid from the official "Cult of Bush" dribble chalices!
EVERU decision our Gub'Mint makes MUST be questioned by EVERYONE!
That is our right, and DUTY as citizens!
Unless we question the 'Bot demi-G_d!
But appearances mean a lot and frankly it just does not LOOK safe to have UAE controlling an area where we have been told we are weak
Your right. And, I'm sure this hasn't been lost on alot of evil islam terrorists.
If this is true, Chertoff is going to get roasted on a spit at the alter political expediency.
And then he goes on to say "we should not have them (any foreigners) running our ports."
What is stupid is your ignorance. DPWorld bought out P&O in an old fashioned business acquisition and the P&O shareholders approved the sale.
If anything you have animus at the P&O shareholders. But what they hey you don't the facts so you blame Bush.
Because DPWorld passed all the regulations.
BTW, what is your solution. Nationalize all the ports, create another huge beaucracy giving union goons and in to raid for more graft, or have a company that recruits the best western talent and will not be in charge of security at the port.
It's easy to b!tch, but I never see you Bush bashers bring up any solutions.
"...why allow the Dems to knock a big hole in that strong point when it isn't necessary?"
Oh puleeeeaze. There are billions at stake for cryin out loud. Course, we (avg joe citizen) won't ever get any of it. But what we'll get in the final is a nuke shoved up our collective colons...brought to our ports all safe and secure courtesy of a UAE (boo hoo but I thought they were our friends) cargo vessel.
Based on the empirical evidence before us, some might correctly conclude that money has taken precendent over our national security. What an effin nightmare.
beam me up scotty
Welcome aboard!
And don't worry about getting called names or being ridiculed, we all are the targets from time to time.
Wrong. It was not too long after the American auto industry completely made junk and imports straightened their asses up.
Yes, if you call handling the coordination of almost 80% of our troop's support. Without the UAE none of our troops would have chow halls in Iraq, or American citizens in support positions, or many other services. They are actually one of our best non-fighting allies over there. That is what I meant.
I understand your thoughts, but Turkey is one of our best allies in that region and they are Muslim. We actually have bases in their country. That Muslim nation are trying their best to be more like Europe, which is better than trying to be like some other countries.
I meant that buying American was not ALWAYS the best thing to do. If it was, we would still be driving around junk cars fashioned after most of the models in the '70's. My loyalty should not give companies permission to make crap, and by the way the unions are ruining America, she was pretty savy in my opinion.
Welcome and thanks for sharing your opinions on this matter
I voted for BUSH twice and I like him but on this issue he is making me furious if he lets it stand and lets the Dems take it on (and rightly so ) and reverse this however they can for our own national security and sanity!
I cannot imagine how the GOP can defend this insane plan to let ARABS run our ports.
This is a winner for the DEMS and I support whatever they can do to get it knocked down.
No, it isn't. Because the DIMS offer nothing as an alternative. All the GOP has to do in the mid-year and national elections is come down heavy on the war on terror, add some photo ops of troops in Iraq and Afghanistan defending the homeland, and maybe a rerun of GWB landing on an aircraft carrier, and the Pubs win hands down.
Nobody in their right mind would vote for liberal America-hating backstabbers for janitor, much less responsible elective office.
