Dana Milbank can be controversial with readers. The Post reporter has his fans -- and I can be one of them -- but I think his appearance on MSNBC last week was a mistake in judgment.
Milbank wore hunting gear -- an orange stocking cap and striped vest and gloves -- on Keith Olbermann's show Monday night and made several meant-to-be-humorous remarks about Vice President Cheney's hunting accident. Here's an example from the transcript:
Olbermann: And will there be more hunting trips? I mean, would you actually go hunting with the vice president at this point, even dressed the way you are?
Milbank: I understand that Pat Fitzgerald has been offered an invitation to the next one.
Spayd [WaPo assistant managing editor for national news] said she felt Milbank "crossed the line" on his TV appearance. "What he intended as a playful joke was viewed by many as mocking and unprofessional, and understandably so." Suffice it to say that he has been taken to The Post's version of the woodshed and told not to do that again.
If Post editors insist he is not an opinion columnist, then Milbank ought to drop the funny hats and stay away from comedy shows.
It all comes down to what Stephen Stanford of Saltillo, Miss., wrote: "If you are going to keep using his work, how about labeling it as opinion and not news?"
Exactly.

I would still rather go hunting with Dick Cheney than take a ride with Ted Kenedy, or go to Ft, Marcy Park with Hillary, or take a plane Bill Clinton sent me on (Brown),or get a blood transfusion from blood sold by Bill Clinton.
Only 100 viewers saw it anyway.
That's not what my husband looks like when he goes hunting! Not even close.
too cowardly to run the Danish cartoons....
#####
That IS the new bright line, isn't it!!!
"The public's right to know" can no longer be used as an excuse for whatever hateful or harmful leftist propaganda our media want to sell us.
He looks the way he writes.
I hope his car doesn't break down, it would be very difficult hitch-hiking in that outfit (or at least it would down here).
Yup. Looks more like a gay highway worker than a hunter.
How clueless and stuck on stupid do these mollycoddled condescending babies have to take it? They're throwing temper tantrums every day and the country is just sitting back and laughing at their pure spoiled brat idiocy.
They're destroying themselves and they deserve every bit of what they don't get...
If it's open season they want...
GOPJ said it well:
"Who cares what 4th grade antics they're up to?".
They now proudly admit that they are engaged in the "entertainment business using current events as the source".
NBC,FOX and all of the idiots who disrespect their audiences deserve to watch as viewership vanishes as it surely is and will.
None of this "stuff" is funny. We got a war going on...half our govt. leaders and all the MSM supporting our enemy and hating our President and all of us.
Our "Joy" and entertaiment will be watching them "eat it"... and by the Lord's good Grace we will.
That IS the new bright line, isn't it!!!
One of the biggest stories in the world - one that's causing world-wide rioting - and the people don't have the right to see what's causing it? You're right. It's the new bright line.
The cowards can wear hunting outfits, act like stenographers for democrats, or go to high level cocktail parties. It doesn't matter. When push comes to shove, they're cowards. Whatever charm they had, and it wasn't that much, is gone.
What real hunters look like...

I wrote: "You might try to be a little more subtle when you attempt to discredit emailers who express conservative opinions."
The MSM always imply we are mind-numbed robots, taking orders from Rush & Co.
Starting at that point, it's not hard to understand their opinions.
They seem to be printing most responses. Here's mine (using a 'pen name'):
Guess what, David? It's not about you. I know that you think it is, but it's not.
I was appalled by your tantrum. You acted like a petulant child, damaging yourself and your 'profession'. Your bias and your narcissism could not have been clearer, and its the reason that people are not watching television news any more.
I am part of a large, active group that is thoroughly enjoying the implosion of the old liberal media. All I can say is keep it up, you're exceeding our wildest dreams.
My question is, will MSNBC allow others to see my comments, or will you censor (excuse me, 'edit') me?
Obviously they printed mine, so the rest of you... have at it!
Add a picture of David Gregory with a giant bag of Depends and you've got Big Media at it's best.
Olberman prooves you can be old and gray yet still be a punk. Perhaps he's using MSNBC as an attempt to break into television - the kind with audiences.
Reminds me of the savant in 'Rainman'. Even look a little like him.
Actually Millbank looks more like an escapee from a county lockup crew, assigned to road trash pick up.
Desperate times for desperate people.
Never saw Dan Rather in a Speedo with mask and snorkel...I guess the MSM can hit a lower bottom.
Sad, but true. Amazing how biased this network has become that it doesn't even recognize this as lacking journalistic integrity.
Dana could redeem himself as objective by appearing on the next show that discusses Clinton, dressed as a cigar... or a sink.
