Dana Milbank can be controversial with readers. The Post reporter has his fans -- and I can be one of them -- but I think his appearance on MSNBC last week was a mistake in judgment.
Milbank wore hunting gear -- an orange stocking cap and striped vest and gloves -- on Keith Olbermann's show Monday night and made several meant-to-be-humorous remarks about Vice President Cheney's hunting accident. Here's an example from the transcript:
Olbermann: And will there be more hunting trips? I mean, would you actually go hunting with the vice president at this point, even dressed the way you are?
Milbank: I understand that Pat Fitzgerald has been offered an invitation to the next one.
Spayd [WaPo assistant managing editor for national news] said she felt Milbank "crossed the line" on his TV appearance. "What he intended as a playful joke was viewed by many as mocking and unprofessional, and understandably so." Suffice it to say that he has been taken to The Post's version of the woodshed and told not to do that again.
If Post editors insist he is not an opinion columnist, then Milbank ought to drop the funny hats and stay away from comedy shows.
It all comes down to what Stephen Stanford of Saltillo, Miss., wrote: "If you are going to keep using his work, how about labeling it as opinion and not news?"

I didn't know they did "news stories" at the Washington Post. I thought they were ALL opinion pieces. Go figure.
What does he mean "crossed the line?" Since when is there a line?
Sorry, but anybody who tunes in to watch Olbermann deserves whatever he gets.
Standing next to Olbermann, it's hard to tell.
You know, 5 years ago there would have been no statement and/or criticism of Milbank. At least now they are beginning to recognize that there is a problem. Of course, it's going to take a long while before they admit the extent of the problem, but I am grateful for small victories.

Otherwise, the Washington Post’s White House correspondent.
On April 17, two days before the official publication of Bob Woodward's Plan of Attack, Dana Milbank of the Washington Post appeared on the Today show to discuss the book's political impact. White House officials "have good reason to be worried," said Milbank. "I think we finally found the weapon of mass destruction here." He continued: "The administration will have a much tougher time knocking down Bob Woodward than they have had in dealing with some of their other critics."

Just appearing on a show with an unhinged nutball like Olbermann should be enough to justify that statement,regardless of what he was wearing.
He is dressed more like pee wee herman than any outdoorsman I have ever seen.
I hope his car doesn't break down, it would be very difficult hitch-hiking in that outfit (or at least it would down here).
Olberman left his screws somewhere besides his head. After all he is playing to the DUmmieland crowd. He can't be too smart.

Can nothing spare us from the arrogance of liberal media figures, still parading around as Guardians of the Facts and Solely Anointed Professional Disseminators of the Truth?
Washington Post reporter Dana Milbank, in what reads like an early April Fools’ prank, has written an article for the Post’s Sunday "Outlook" section presenting himself as an objective reporter. The headline was "My Bias for Mainstream News." In it, he complains that the "cottage industry" of watchdog groups on the right and left "are devoted almost entirely to attacking the press."

Olberman is the ass. Shows he did during the Clinton administration were fawning, without fail
There is, however, room for some humor over the accident as long as it is not partisan. For instance, I wrote on a blog that in retrospect, it would have saved time, money and lives if Dick Cheney had just taken Saddam hunting. I have been a big Cheney fan since he served as President Ford's Chief of Staff.
