The suppression of Able Danger
Toledo Blade ^ | 2/18/2006 | Jack Kelly

Posted on 02/18/2006 6:33:28 AM PST by americaprd

"WE were sitting on the north coast watching the fighters come in, and we couldn't do anything about it," Eric Kleinsmith told the House Armed Services Committee Wednesday.

The allusion Mr. Kleinsmith made was to the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, but he was speaking of the more devastating surprise attack which took place on Sept. 11, 2001.

Mr. Kleinsmith and the two colleagues who testified with him in open session are convinced that had the information they developed been acted on, not only 9/11, but also the October, 2000, attack on the destroyer USS Cole in which 17 sailors died could have been prevented.

Through computer scanning of some 2.5 terabytes of classified and unclassified data, the Able Danger team identified five "nodes" of al-Qaeda activity. One was in Brooklyn, N.Y. Another was in the port of Aden in Yemen, where the USS Cole was attacked.

Able Danger linked Mohamed Atta and three other 9/11 hijackers to the Brooklyn cell, said Lt. Col. Tony Shaffer, who was the liaison between the Defense Intelligence Agency and the Able Danger team.

"It shocked us how entrenched a presence al-Qaeda had in the United States," Mr. Kleinsmith said.

Colonel Shaffer testified he tried three times to have Able Danger data on the Brooklyn cell presented to the FBI, but that on each occasion Pentagon lawyers forbade the meeting.

In a commentary in the Wall Journal last November, Louis Freeh, who was FBI director at the time, said that if he had been told about what Able Danger had learned, 9/11 likely would have been prevented.

Why isn't this getting more press. Someone change David Gregory's diaper, wash his mouth out with soap, spank his silly *ss and tell him to do something worthwhile, investigate this story. (Under the threat, of course, that if he distorts the truth, he will have to wear his dirty diaper until he gets it right)!

"Nice to see someone is covering Able Danger."I agree. The msm won't touch this with a ten foot pole. Why not?I believe the Clinton admin was involved in the supression of AD.Of course if the Bush admin were implicated in this fiasco, this would be frontpage news,24/7.

David Gregory has been 'bottle fed' news stories for so long, he has no idea how to go out and do real reporting.

Ping......I find it interesting that a Toledo paper covers this, that an article appears now and that this whole story (when it actually broke) appears to have been swept under the rug.

Thoughts?

So it will take the bought and paid for "media" to expose the truth?

The gop controls the entire government, top to bottom.

The fact that the administration is covering up this intellegence, is disturbing to the point of fear.

Able danger has been buried by the dems and liberal pubs and is a dead issue at this point.
I am more concerned about the Presidents latest folly of handing over 5 of America's seaports to the United Arab Immigrants corporation; Arabs will control and even maintain security of these 5 seaports. Perhaps the President really believes the bogus "Islam is a religion of peace" blarney he spouts regularly. He hugs and kisses to many Arab Islamics who support America's and Israels death methinks.
Are their really any conservatives left or have they all been railroaded out of politics at this point.

Even most of the 'conservative' talk shows spent more time on the Cheney accident than on Able Danger after Weldon's hearings.

AD just has no legs -- the media, including 'conservative' talk shows -- are more interested in mind-mush than in real news, and most government/politicians don't want it aired.

AD will get buried in the dustbin of history. Maybe a century from now, some historian will dig it out and give it a full investigation. Until then, too many living persons (from both political parties) are too directly involved for AD to get a full airing.

.....""It's unclear why the Bush Administration is covering up, since the suppression of Able Danger occurred on President Clinton's watch. But it is clear there is a cover-up. One would think a Washington press corps obsessing about a hunting accident in Texas would be more curious about it.""

Jack Kelly is a columnist for the Post Gazette, of which the Toldeo Blade is a saister newspaper. Look for his column in the Sunday Post Gazette (and hopefully other papers owned by the same publisher.) The reason for the delay is that he is a columnist and he needed to wait for his next rotation (he has set days his column appears) to come up for the column to run.

He mentioned this on his blog, which I posted on FR yesterday.

The open hearings on AD was broadcast by C-Span sometime during the night. I believe around 3AM.

A woman called into the morning call in show and complained about the timing.....asked if they would repeat so we could all see it.

She said it was riveting.......anyone see it?

There were two hearings this week that were Able Danger related. The first one was before the House Government Reform Committee on whistleblowers, in which Schaeffer testified about the retaliation agaisnt him. That was covered by cspan, but it did not get into a lot of detaisl on the Able Danger program. That was Tuesday.

The second hearing, before the House Armed Services committee was on Wednesday and was not covered by Cspan, or any other major news outlets for that matter. Some other posts have links to the audio. This hearing was MUCH more riveting than the Tuesday hearing.

I believe that it was the 2nd hearing that C-Span put on in the middle of the night.

Any one see it?

Well, Weldon on the Michael Savage show gave Cspan a hard time for not sending any cameras out, so I doubt it. The Cspan schedule also lists the whistleblower hearing as being on in the middle of the night (I think it was the third or fourth time they showed it).

It's unclear why the Bush Administration is covering up, since the suppression of Able Danger occurred on President Clinton's watch. But it is clear there is a cover-up.

Folks still employed are keeping the lid tight. The Pentagon, Senators and all kinds of Government employees for life protect the gravy train.
