Chuck Schumer is trying to stop the sale of the six ports to UAE. Talks about the potential of planting a nuclear device at one of these ports. This is an important issue because Savage hates Chuck Schumer but Schumer is right on this one.

I didn't think I'd ever see the day that I agreed with that little putz, but I agree with you that he's right on this one. Pigs are flying.

Go through all of this day's threads and look through every one that relates to the proposed merger/acquisition in question.

The fallacy that "the UAE company is buying six ports" has been debunked so many times that people like Savage come across as thoroughly ignorant on this subject.

Schumer does, too . . . but then I would expect that of him.

They are selling ports to UAE? I thought they just bought the company that is currently administering port services.

No he isnt. I swear, what is it with some of you?

I want someone to tell me how the UAE OWNING these ports, with the same damm people running them, is such a bad thing? These people are rolling in dough, which makes them LESS likely targets for corruption, as opposed to some poor conglomerate which would be less likely to afford the proper security measures?

A lot of knee-jerk myopia on the loose about this issue.

"Chuck Schumer is trying to stop the sale of the six ports to UAE."

We can argue about the merits of it, but the ports aren't being sold. Ports can't be sold. They are buying the port operating division of a London-based, British-owned Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co. That purchase will include current contracts that P&O ports has with the various ports listed in the stories on this. There are other port operation companies out there. The port in New York or any of the other ports mentioned could choose to contract with some other company if they do not want DWI, the UAE-based company buying P&O, being responsible for operating terminals in these ports. As we understand it the same employees who work for P&O currently will still be the employees that work there after the purchase goes through.

I don't think there are suddenly going to be Arabs running all over the ports. Anymore so than there already are. Actually because of regulations and unions, more and more of ocean shipping, port operations and terminal operations in America are being run by non-American companies. We can argue about whether that's right or wrong, but let's be accurate about what's really happening here. It's that operations are currently run by a British company being bought out by a company in the UAE. We still have full control over the ports.

Let's not fall into this trap. This is just a cheap trick by Schumer and the Dems. to look like they're to the right of the president on security issues, while undermining him in every other respect on natl. security. It's just an easy bit of positioning for them which involves misrepresenting what's going on. But on real security issues, the Dems. are actively working to undermine the country whether on Iraq, wiretapping of Al Qaeda suspects, Gitmo, etc.

ok so a UAE co. owns the ports and a nuke comes in a boat and goes boom. bad.

what if the uae does not own the port? the boat cannot come into port? AFAIK the manifest isn't going to say 'nuke inside, detonate upon arrival'

for so many major us coastal cities i don't see that you have to bring the nuke on land and pass through custonms to accomplish the unthinkable.

I have to admit, a stopped clock is right twice a day, with Schumer, maybe once... MAYBE. But you're right. Whoever OK'd this deal needs to be given his or her walking papers!

I agree - for this one time Chuckie is right.

And .. I noticed the guy at the podium is Coburn (R-OK). Coburn is a no-nonsense kind of guy - and if he's siding with Chuckie - this is a serious matter.
