Sunday Morning Show *Preview* for 2/19/06 (not the live thread)
Network and Cable News Networks | 2/17/06 | Network and Cable News

Posted on 02/17/2006 3:01:50 PM PST by Phsstpok

Fox News Sunday (Chris Wallace)

NBC Meet The Press (Tim Russert)

CBS Face The Nation (Bob Schieffer)

ABC This Week (George Stephanopoulos)

CNN Late Edition (Wolf Blitzer)

This is NOT intended to be the live Sunday Morning Talk Show thread. I trust AB will do that as usual. This is strictly a preview of who will be on the main shows. The idea is to give folks a chance to muster their resources for that thread.

I would particularly ask that anyone with specific knowledge or resources about the topics / guests announced for these shows post them here so that the rest of us can go into the shows with a heads up on what to look for. For example, Will anyone bring up Andrew McCarthy's complete destruction of George Will's column about the legality of the NSA program?

Tony has a good line up each week too; I've only recently been able to listen to his show online because we got faster DSL service, but his guests from what I've seen of the Live thread are really good "gets".

All of them do rather silly, more light news occasionally because they are in the entertainment business too and want listeners. That's how I think of Rush. He makes excellent points about the hypocrisy of the left, but he has fun doing it and I get to laugh also.

If it was all serious all the time, I, would have deadly serious about national security issues, wouldn't listen because it's too depressing to hear 24/7.

We're headed out for the day soon but I'll check in this evening when we return and see if there's been any movement on getting our folks to get those tapes front and center.

What No Biden? No McCain? No Hagel? Guess they figured Boxer, Graham, Bayh, and Simpson would exceed their Sunday Stupid quotient enough that any additional reinforcements would be overkill..

Any chance of one of the abysmal left-wing media referring to the reprehensible comment by the always lamentable Jack Cafferty referring to FoxNews as The F-word Network"?

Maybe the sappy Peggy Noonan could make a comment on this!

Mr Gregory, do you realize what enormous damage your childish behavior has done to your profession and the Journalistic Credibility of NBC news?

Mannequin-face Gregory: "No."

The media have really gotten to me this week. Of course, not a Peep from the MSM about Al Gore's disgusting comments in Saudi Arabia.

Yes, you are so right. Yet, there are still many here at FR who suggest that the old media is dead and irrelevant. They are wrong!

****

The old established/liberal/socialist media is America's most ruthless, relentless, and destructive enemy.

Huxley: “ The greatest triumphs of propaganda have been accomplished, not by doing something, but by refraining from doing. Great is truth, but still greater, from a practical point of view, is silence about truth." — Old Media lives these words.

Can you imagine what the Sat Nite live people are going to do with this one? My personal fav would be the VP at a press Conf shooting reporters rather then answering their questions.

If SNL had any real balls they would tell the real story.

.......Whittington joking to nurses said that Dick's shooting of him (a lawyer) was just Dick's first attempt at tort reform.

Nightly@NBC.com

To NBC News;

Mr David Gregory's marriage to a former Clinton Administration Lawyer, and DNC activist, clearly has an undue influence on NBC's White House coverage. Don't you think this fundamental conflict of interest between Mr Gregory's job and his personal life make it impossible for him to be taken seriously as a journalist? Does NBC even realize what serious questions this raises about their journalistic credibility that they would allow such a fundamental conflict of interest in such an major position of infulence? In any other industry such a conflict of interest would result in a lawsuit. It is fairly obvious after last week's childish tantrums at the White House that Mr Gregory is NOT ready for prime time. The refusal of NBC to reassign Mr Gregory raises serious questions about NBC's Journalistic integrity.

-bump-

Frist may hit on "DEM obstructionism" in the Senate as the reason the USA PATRIOT Act is not renewed. I don't know if the asbestos bill will come up. That issue is real old too - Congress has attempted legislated programs to administer asbestos claims for a decade or more (notes aren't handy - could be 30 years of attempts to craft legislation).

On the NSA terrorist surveillance meme, the general thrust will be "Congress is going to 'do something,' but it doesn't know just what, just yet." Many options are being bandied about, and neither party is going to permit President Bush the comfort of just having the program "be accepted" without further talk, etc.

The Katrina meme is complex too, but no matter whether one takes the Lott approach (make FEMA a separate department, not under DHS), or retain the current management structure, all directions lead to MORE Federal government. Make that "more and better," they'll promise.

The Whittington shooting meme is an example of how superficial the media is, and how the public isn't able to take itself where the media doesn't go.

I wonder if Iran will come up, or the impending flurry of activity when SCOTUS announces a decision on either the Padilla or Hamdan case. Graham might be asked about Congressional intent in the Detainee Treatment Act.

Overarching meme - WH is secretive, infused with cronyism, and incompetent. Iraq will be used to reinforce, but Iraq won't be the major tool.

Gregory lives in Washington, D.C. with his wife Beth Wilkinson, an executive vice president and the general counsel of Fannie Mae, along with their three children.

December 20, 2005

WASHINGTON, DC -- The Board of Directors of Fannie Mae (FNM/NYSE) today announced Beth Wilkinson has been appointed Executive Vice President and General Counsel, and Bill Senhauser has been appointed Senior Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer.

As Executive Vice President and General Counsel, Wilkinson will serve as principal legal counsel to the company's Board of Directors and senior executives, and will set Fannie Mae's legal agenda, address critical legal issues and have oversight and management responsibility for all legal strategies, services and resources. She will report to the chief executive officer and serve as corporate secretary to the Board of Directors. Wilkinson joins Fannie Mae from Latham & Watkins, LLP, where she is a partner and represented a variety of Fortune 500 companies, including General Electric, Ford Motor Company and the health care company HCA, regarding complex business disputes, investigations and litigation.

"Beth has the extraordinary legal expertise, corporate governance background, as well as the leadership we were seeking. She has a clear vision for how the legal department can support Fannie Mae's business going forward and she has a thorough understanding of the role and importance of regulatory oversight in the functioning of a company. Beth will be a great addition to our senior leadership team," said President and Chief Executive Officer Daniel H. Mudd.

Prior to her tenure at Latham & Watkins, LLP, Wilkinson was the special attorney to the U.S. Attorney General serving as a prosecutor in the U.S. v. McVeigh and Nichols cases. For that she received the U.S. Attorney General's highest commendation -- the Exceptional Service Award -- for a second time, making her the only two-time recipient in history. She also has served as the Principal Deputy in the Terrorism & Violent Crime Section of the U.S. Department of Justice, Criminal Division.

Before then Wilkinson was counsel to the Deputy Attorney General in U.S. Attorney General's office in Washington, D.C.; Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York; and Special Assistant, U.S. Attorney (U.S. v. Noriega) for the Southern District of Florida (Miami, FL); and Assistant to the General Counsel for Intelligence and Special Operations, Department of the Army, General Counsel's Office. Wilkinson received her J.D. from The University of Virginia and her bachelor of arts degree from Princeton University.

'The MSM are out of their tiny minds, particularly CNN for lashing out at Brit Hume and Fox for the Cheney interview'

I loved Brit's comment on this at the end of that Special Report. (paraphrasing) 'I was asked how we got the interview. I told them it was not because we are the house organ for the pubs, but because we had the largest audience. I don't think that quote will show up anywhere.'

Overarching meme - WH is secretive, infused with cronyism, and incompetent. Iraq will be used to reinforce, but Iraq won't be the major tool.

I do believe you've nailed it with this conclusion

Frist may hit on "DEM obstructionism" in the Senate as the reason the USA PATRIOT Act is not renewed.

Didn't the patriot act just get renewed with "cosmetic changes" something like 97 to 3?  I wouldn't be a bit surprised that that vote happened Friday in order to keep this from being in issue for Frist on Sunday

I don't know if the asbestos bill will come up.

I'm betting not.  It would require real work on both the journalists and politicians parts to actually provide real information to the public.  You know that neither of them are interested in doing that!

the general thrust will be "Congress is going to 'do something,' but it doesn't know just what, just yet."

This is emerging as a major behind the scenes fight between Congress and the executive.  Even the Republicans in Congress, particularly the Senate, are jealous of admitting that the President has any powers not granted by them.  Roberts is even trying to force feed yet another "judicial review" process on Bush over this.  And Roberts is even balking at the deal the rest of the Republicans and most of the Democrats agreed to where Bush agreed to provide oversight to a newly created joint House/Senate subcommittee of the Intelligence committees for programs like the current NSA international surveillance.  Roberts is wanting to punt it to yet another "judicial review" body like FISA.  He's apparently afraid that the joint committee would actually make politicians accountable for screwing up in this regard.

Are there no politicians that one can count on?

And for FEMA "all directions lead to MORE Federal government."

Who watches the watchers?  None of the investigations have asked the simple question "did Congress screw up when they created these bureaucracies?"  That is the most important question.  I think that the recent sell out by the House Katrina committee blaming all problems on an ill defined "government" totally distorts reality.  Where are the reminders that FEMA is not accountable for any actions for the first 72 hours after a disaster?  That has been part of the equation since day one simply because there is no way in hell that a federal bureaucracy can respond quickly enough or get resources in place in time to help before that.  This administration, represented by the US Coast Guard, actually did better than that, saving over 6,000 lives in the first 72 hours after the floods (more lives saved than in any other comparable period - more likely any other previous YEAR).  This is going to be a scandal that will make (or break) historians careers.

The Whittington shooting meme is an example of how superficial the media is

This is my great joy from this week.  The MSM, as embodied by twit Gregory of NBC, have NOT shot themselves in the foot.  No, they were a little higher and more towards the center line.  The verdict from the public and the rest of the media is consistent and irreversible.

I wonder if Iran will come up

only as a way to bash Bush for not being tough enough.

or the impending flurry of activity when SCOTUS announces a decision on either the Padilla or Hamdan case

Not a chance.  That would require work by the "journalists."

Beth Wilkinson blast from the past: http://www.FreeRepublic.com/forum/a3b100bac0a47.htm

And more recently, http://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1182592/posts?page=244#244.

Fundrace Neighbor Search shows Beth Wilkinson giving $2,000 to Wes Clark and $1,500 to John Kerry.

She also has successfully represented Phillip Morris in tobacco-related lawsuits, see e.g., http://www.tobacco.org/news/133875.html and http://www.tobacco.org/news/135181.html.

The Oklahoma City Bombing and the Politics of Terror
by David Hoffman - Hosted by the Constitution Society

Even the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) was forced to conclude that 4,800 pounds of ANFO could have not caused the so-called crater in Oklahoma City. FEMA's report, published on August 30, 1996, inadvertently concluded that the bombers would have had to use approximately three times the amount reportedly used in Oklahoma City.[62]

Another interesting confirmation came from FBI agent Danny Defenbaugh, who, along with U.S. Attorney Beth Wilkerson, visited General Partin in June of 1995. Part of the team that prosecuted McVeigh and Nichols, Wilkerson interviewed Partin on the presumption that he would be called as a witness. "...and [Agent Defenbaugh] was going through the report that I did," said Partin, "and he put his finger on that picture I had in the report... the designated crater, and he said, 'Suppose I told you that is not the crater?'"

Partin believes Wilkerson and Defenbaugh (who Partin described as belligerent) interviewed him as part of a ruse to find out what he knew about the blast(s), so the government could carefully avoid those issues at trial. While they pretended to be interested in Partin's analysis, they never kept their word to follow up the interview.

"I think what they did," said Partin, "was they looked at my credentials and technical justification of all this stuff, and they felt found that what I had was based on some pretty sound footing.... I think that's why they framed the case the way they did." [63] ...

"We have no information showing anyone other than Mr. McVeigh and Mr. Nichols are the masterminds" - U.S. Attorney Beth Wilkinson ...

Yet at a hearing on April 9, federal prosecutor Beth Wilkinson stated that the government "has no information showing anyone but Mr. Nichols and Mr. McVeigh were the masterminds of this bombing."[776] ...

Others, like juror Keith Brookshier, said"[I] know that Terry Nichols was into it up to his eyeballs and that's the only thing I had to decide.... We're not trying John Doe 2, or 3 or 4 or whatever." U.S. Attorney Beth Wilkinson naturally added her voice to the ensemble, stating that "sightings of John Doe 2 were about as common and about as credible as sightings of Elvis."[1376] ...
