Big Apple Terror?
Sources: Al Qaeda Plotting to Attack New York City Corporations
ABCNEWS.com

N E W  Y O R K, July 31, 2004? ABC News has learned that federal and New York City officials have received credible intelligence that al Qaeda has been plotting to carry out suicide attacks on corporations based in the city.

Sources at several law enforcement agencies tell ABC News that an "overseas source" has provided the information about the threat to New York and that it is more significant than the usual "chatter" intercepted from likely terrorists that has prompted warnings in the past.

Officials from dozens of local and federal agencies met into the night Friday and again this morning.

"Intelligence reporting indicates that al Qaeda continues to target for attack commercial and financial institutions, as well as international organizations, inside the United States," the New York City Police Department said in a statement released today on the "ongoing al Qaeda threat."

"The NYPD recommends that corporate and institutional security directors review their protection of HVAC systems, parking installations, and security in general," the statement added. "The alert level for New York City remains unchanged at 'orange' or 'high.'"

Border Worries

Intelligence sources say al Qaeda plans to move non-Arab terrorists across the border with Mexico.

Authorities already have in custody a woman of Pakistani-origin arrested after crossing into Texas. She carried a South African passport with several of the pages torn out, $7,000 in cash and an airplane ticket to New York.

New York is already on heightened alert for the Republican National Convention, which meets at Madison Square Garden in a month and will bring scores of high government officials to town.

The sources tell ABC News that Wall Street firms may be among the targeted U.S. corporations based in New York City. Which corporations or how many may be targeted has not been revealed.

Suicide Truck Bombings

Particularly disturbing to authorities were the intelligence reports that the attack may involve one or more suicide truck bombings, a tactic never seen in the United States, but one widely used by terrorists elsewhere.

"I think they want to try and shake our psyche again," says Jerry Hauer, an ABC News consultant and former director of New York City's Office of Emergency Management. "And I think the easy types of attacks right now are car bombs, truck bombs."

Law enforcement officials acknowledge such bombs are extremely difficult to prevent.

As to the timing of any planned attack, sources say it could take place between now and Election Day in November.

As the government tries to verify the reports of the threat, there are no plans to raise the national threat level, a senior Bush administration official tells ABC News.

ABCNEWS' Pierre Thomas and Bob Jamieson contributed to this report.

Stephen Jones seems to think the mystery leg belongs to one of the bombers.

FOX -- THE EDGE WITH PAULA ZAHN
June 11, 2001 Monday

Leading THE EDGE
Inside Timothy McVeigh's Execution

GUESTS: Stephen Jones, Beth Wilkinson
BYLINE: Paula Zahn, Shepard Smith

ZAHN: And joining us now with more on the McVeigh execution is Stephen Jones, who led McVeigh's defense team when he was convicted and sentenced to death on federal bombing charges.

Welcome back to THE EDGE, sir.

STEPHEN JONES, FORMER MCVEIGH ATTORNEY
: Thank you, Paula.

(snip)

ZAHN: And do you still to this day believe the conspiracy went beyond Lori, Michael Fortier and James Nichols?

JONES: I think in all likelihood it did, yes.

ZAHN: And is there any evidence you can point to of who those other people would have been?

JONES: Well, you know, there's still the question and the government acknowledges that they have an unidentified leg. They have nine left legs and they have eight victims with traumatically amputated left legs. They cannot match the ninth leg to any victim or to any person that's known to be missing or unaccounted for. So who does it belong to? Well, it is consistent with eyewitness testimony that it belongs to one of the bombers. There are still people who saw someone with Terry Nichols that looked like Tim McVeigh but wasn't Tim McVeigh. And we know that it couldn't have been Tim McVeigh because he was somewhere else. And that person hasn't been identified.

And somewhere along the line, Paula, there has to be someone who designed and assisted in the construction and transportation of this terrible, destructive device. And that, I think, is still an open question.

Okay. I'm done. :-)

I left that area in June of 2001 and started working in NJ instead. I agree with what you've seen, but there is much more going on than what is seen. I had quite a few friends and ex coworkers die on 9/11/2001 plus about 300 people from my community. I take this seriously and I have contacts that are still very much a part of the Wall Street community including some who actually work the floor of the exchange. I could tell someone how to best bypass the security there, but I would literally puts friends and family at risk, so I won't do it. FWIW, even the FRB is not what it appears to be and some of the most sensitive areas are not well known even by insiders.

Must agree with you there. But what about when everyone is walking to work FROM the subway? Aren't there a lot of people in place at one time?

Thanks Nita. That is fascinating, and disturbing.

Prosecutors suggested Friday the leg could have belonged to a homeless person.

Of course, because all homeless people take the time to shave their legs. Not.

Good Evening All-

FNC and CNN aren't making too much of a big deal about this story.

The wise commuter, in any city, would be best served by avoiding any straight thoroughfares where an Islamic terrorist could get a "running start" with a stolen taxi or truck. My guess is that buildings with basement ramps or of glass construction would be most vulnerable.

Time to walk through the narrowest alleyways to and from the office...even if it takes an extra five or ten minutes each way.

Unfortunately, the bad guys may have been in place for years - WORKING in those places

A year or so before September 11 I had lunch with a friend who speaks many languages. He happened to mention, as we were leaving the restaurant, that all the kitchen help in that particular (well known restaurant) were Muslim. He overheard them talking about how hungry they were and they hadn't eaten all day. It was during Ramadan. I didn't think much of it until after 9/11.

Suicide truck bombings are VERY bad news. The human casualties caused by several bombs going off in quick succession could easily eclipse those suffered on 9-11, especially when positioned to maximize potential. My main concern, besides outright prevention and interdiction, is how the sitting president (Bush or Kerry) would respond. Are countries who harbor terrorists STILL responsible for their guests, or was that tough-talk rhetoric? Look at Spain, who made a few arrests but has made ZERO military effort to prevent another attack. Will this be us next?

Yes, there are many people in the streets. The problem is that much of the explosive/chemical forces are dissipated in open air. To compensate, you'd need much shrapnel. I still think a multiple suicide attack on the subways has the potential to create the most deaths and panic.

New York doesn't have alleyways.

Good Morning All-

Posted by Sarcasm:
"...New York doesn't have alleyways..."

You're clearly being sarcastic. There are a variety of alleyways absolutely impassable to trucks and virtually impassable to cars in New York's Financial District. They're simply too narrow to allow passage for a cube van or similar.

Although the enemy knows our weaknesses (um, borders, economy), they still don't remember or don't place enough importance on how straongly we rallied when attacked last time. This is inconsistent with how "smart" they're supposed to be. Why isn't anyone analyzing that, instead of "why they hate us"?
