MONETT, Mo. (AP) - Rural firefighters stood by and watched a fire destroy a garage and a vehicle because the property owner had not paid membership dues.

Bibaldo Rueda - who was injured battling the flames Monday - offered to pay the dues as the fire blazed away, but the Monett Rural Fire Department does not have a policy for on-the-spot billing, Sheriff's Detective Robert Evenson said.

Okay, so you want to pass a law saying what? All state governments must provide fire protection to all residents? Or all county governments? Or what?

No - I just want to see how long I can make you keep getting the last word.

"If the guy lost everything in the fire the fire department allowed to burn, you can be sure he won't pay now."

He lost a garage and a car.

A cheap lesson depending on how you look at it. He's alive, he has his four trailers. He has a new respect for paying attention to where he cuts corners on his budget.

Note that they deployed anyway. Obviously, whoever he called had his address, and they'd have immediately known whether he'd paid his protection money or not. But they deployed anyway. Why bother?

Because his 3 neighbors had payed their yearly dues and they were making sure their houses didn't catch fire. They were doing what they are paid to do. If he doesn't like the system he should move to a high tax area or live in the city.

Why do you people feel we must live like you? Why must you force your high tax ways on us? The people in the area overwhelmingly voted down a tax based fire system. The people have spoken. Majority rule and all that. I thought that was what made America great.

Also...

The department said it will fight a fire without question if a life is believed to be in danger.

Good morning.
"Even if it was a meth lab operation?:

I'm not saying you are stupid but that is a stupid question.

The volunteers I know, and have known in other areas, risk their lives and do their job, come Hell or high water, or they give up the job.

Have you heard about cops refusing to do their job because the victim was a bad guy? Oops, stupid question on my part.

I keep thinking that I'm in an alternate universe where DU and FR servers and their members switched places.

Missouri is the number one state in the nation for meth production. It happens. People were getting run off their vacation property here. Meth labs were popping up in our state forests. People stumbling across the labs were getting shot at.

The sherriffs in some counties would not assist.

Shocking?

I've had discussions in the past with at least one of the socialists you debated with in this thread. He doesn't read the articles, posts anyway, accuses anyone who disagrees with him as being a Bill Clinton fan, and then disappears.

I get a good chuckle out of seeing them get educated, though, even if it doesn't take.

But they deployed anyway. Why bother?

To make sure the fire did not spread to other houses that had bought the yearly tag.

Anybody that lives there is only one clerical error away from having their payment "lost".

Same thing can be said for you Social Security check, and your auto insurance.

Speaking of which, since you obviously believe that people should be allowed to wait until after the accident happens to buy insurance, why don't you cancel your car insurance and buy it when you need it?

Meth is our state bird here in Missouri.

It is indeed what makes America great. So does hashing out arguments about things. If people really prefer this, then so be it. I've said my piece.

But I'd still buy lots of fire extinguishers, just in case the fire chief doesn't feel like putting out my fire some day.

I'd buy fire extinguishers even if I had the best fire service in the nation.

This isn't insurance. If it was... I'd get a different insurance company.

If you don't like the way the fire department is funded, you could start your own.

Since your position is that volunteer fire departments should put out everybody's fires, even the ones who didn't pay, shouldn't health care also be free?

The hospital has the equipment and the personnel. If somebody with no insurance and no assets gets hurt in a car wreck or needs a heart transplant, shouldn't the hospital just do it for free?

Actually, that is what has happened in towns that border Mexico, and hospitals near the border are literally going bankrupt and shutting down because once an illegal makes it through their doors they must be treated for free.

Which do you prefer, a fire department that only puts out the fires of people who have paid, or no fire department at all?

Being a socialist, I am sure you would prefer no fire department at all.

Good morning.
"Shocking?"

Shocking but not surprising.

Our county tried to divert marijuana eradication funds to the effort to stop meth production and were threatened by the feds with a cut off of funding and support. Our LEOs still do their job.

Meth is one of the greatest threats we face today and I'm for a quick death penalty for big dealers, maybe even for manufacturers, but I would be very ticked at any of the people who are supposed to help us refusing to do so. It would be like soldiers deciding not to fight.

On a more practical note, letting a building you think is a lab burn is asking for widespread death and destruction when the place blows up.

"People stumbling across the labs were getting shot at.

The sherriffs in some counties would not assist."

Are you saying the LEOs wouldn't help victims of crimes? That's what an innocent who stumbles across an operation and is shot at is, a victim.

We have the same problem with labs and growing operations, usually manned and guarded by illegals or bikers, but our Sheriff's Deputies and firefighters wouldn't think about failing to do their job. I'm glad I don't live where you do.

It's good this the FR and not DU, isn't it.
