Georgia Governor: Perdue Leads by Double Digits
Rasmussen Reports ^ | February 16, 2006 | Rasmussen Reports

Posted on 02/16/2006 2:49:03 PM PST by Kuksool

February 16, 2006--Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue (R) holds a 20-point lead over two challengers who would like to replace him as Governor.

Perdue leads Secretary of State Cathy Cox (D), 54% to 34%. He leads Lt. Governor Mark Taylor (D) 53% to 33% margin.

The overall flavor of the race has changed little since our January election poll in Georgia. Perdue now enjoys a slightly larger lead over Cox than he did a month ago.

Perdue became Governor four years ago as one of the surprises in Election 2002. He is the first Republican Governor of Georgia in over 100 years.

Perdue is viewed favorably by 68% of his state's voters. Cox is viewed favorably by 55% and Taylor by 48%.

Georgia voters trust President Bush more than Congressional Democrats when it comes to the situation in Iraq. They are fairly evenly divided as to who they trust more on economic matters.

Now, if we could just get rid of that mentally diminished Cynthia McKinney once and for all.

Another Republican Governor that didn't screw up during the hurricanes.

Amen! I'm just hoping Reed weathers this Abramoff scandal and rides in on Perdue's coat tails.

Casey Cagle will be the GOP nominee for Lt Gov, and he will win handily.

Last I checked, Reed was polling better (and had raised much more money than) Cagle.

Could Cagle on the ballot, motivate the Flaggers (Confederate Flag Lovers) to rush to the polls and vote against Perdue. I don't think Perdue is vulnerable to them, but they can be quite irritating

Someone whose name sounds like "kegel" should not run for elected office anyways ; )

If Reed beats Cagle in the GOP primary, he'll lose the general. Bank on it.

Hey! Stop talking about my Congresswoman like that!

Just kidding...

We got rid of her once. But she came back. Like a rash.

Denise Majette was like Condi compared to this one.

I don't doubt that. But it will be tough to say no the man who crushed the Dem Lock on GA which lasted over a 100 years.

I think that's a cheap shot. Cagle is a distinguished legislator with a strong Conservative record. It's Reed that is attempting to buy the office so he can run for his real goal, that of Governor, and carries way too much baggage at this point that would jeopardize the office remaining in 'Rat hands.

Is there a Democratic candidate for Lt.?

I've heard some are trying to talk Thurbert Baker into it. He'd be a fool to leave the AG's office. He's got a pretty strong grip on that job.

I don't know what was so spectacular about Majette. If the 'Rats are going to elect leftists, let them be as ugly and psychotic as humanly possible to contrast with the sane GOP. Majette was merely a more mild-mannered liberal, but she was still wrong on almost everything.

In the past, I liked Reed. But something has happened to the man to change my opinion of him. I think in the past 4 years he has become highly toxic and could needlessly lose us the Lt Governorship (an office we have never won, to my knowledge -- I don't believe it existed during Reconstruction). It's not just the Abramoff business, either. Perhaps it is simply better when some people stay behind the scenes. I don't believe Reed can even make an argument as to why he is more qualified for a job to preside over the Senate, for which he has never served, over a man who has considerable experience in that body, Casey Cagle.

"let them be as ugly and psychotic as humanly possible"

That's easy to say when they aren't your Representative.

Majette was at least cordial to those who lived in the northern part of the district. To Cynthia, we are the enemy. We didn't vote for her, so we aren't her constituents.

I recently wanted to send an e-mail to my rep on a relatively non-partisan issue. I called her local office. She has NO PUBLICLY AVAILABLE E-MAIL ADDRESS. Can you believe that? I asked how I could get something to her in writing. They said mail. I asked if they had a fax number. They couldn't give me one for DC - where she was at the time - but said if I faxed it to the local office they'd forward it to her.

I figure she gets so much hate mail that she tries to avoid the mail.

Sometimes the most "experienced" candidate does not get the nod - see Reagan vs. Carter - that's just politics. If nothing else happens to Reed, he's getting the nomination - I am sorry for the kegel comment above - we'll have to see what happens after that leading up to the general election.

There are 3 declared candidates on the 'Rat side. Former State Sen. Greg Hecht, former State Rep. Jim Martin and activist Griffin Lotson. 2 potential, but undeclared, candidates include Max Cleland (yup, that Max Cleland), and Labor Commissioner Mike Thurmond. The filing deadline isn't until the end of April, so we may see a surprise or two. The 'Rats very much do not want to lose this office.

To my knowledge, Thurbert Baker hasn't been mentioned as a potential candidate (AG in some ways would be a better office to hold over Lt Gov), and I'd agree it would be foolish to leave it for a risky run to preside over a body in which he would be a member of the minority party, and largely irrelevent for the purposes of organizing the body, as Mark Taylor is now.

Right now, the 'Rats outnumber us 5 to 3 for statewide offices (Our holding just the Gov, Schools Chief, and Insurance Comm), and we probably will grab Lt Gov (with Cagle) and Sec of State (with either Bill Stephens or Karen Handel). It would be nice to bump off Baker for AG, an office we last held with the troubled Mike Bowers, but I don't know how strong his main opponent, Fmr. Sen. Perry McGuire is. The real shocker is how Tommy Irvin has managed to hold onto the Agriculture Commissioner position since the Lester Maddox Administration (!) in 1969, which makes him, to my knowledge, the longest-serving statewide officeholder in the nation (close on the heels of my Lt Gov north of the border here in TN, who has served since 1971, but he is elected by the Senate as opposed to statewide). Surely a Republican can make the claim that its long overdue for a change, and also against Mike Thurmond, too, who has been in for 8 years (if he doesn't opt to run for Lt Gov).
