There were some eye-opening remarks from Bryant Gumbel on the most recent episode of HBO's Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel. According to a transcript posted by a television columnist named Seth Frelich, Gumbel said the following in his closing monologue last week (emphasis mine):
"Finally, tonight, the Winter Games. Count me among those who don’t care about them and won’t watch them ... Because they’re so trying ... Like, try not to be incredulous when someone attempts to link these games to those of the ancient Greeks who never heard of skating or skiing. So try not to laugh when someone says these are the world’s greatest athletes, despite a paucity of blacks that makes the Winter Games look like a GOP convention. Try not to point out that something’s not really a sport if a pseudo-athlete waits in what’s called a kiss-and-cry area, while some panel of subjective judges decides who won ... So if only to hasten the arrival of the day they’re done, when we can move on to March Madness — for God’s sake, let the games begin."
I'm black, and my wife is Puerto Rican. The problem is we're afraid our son will grow up to lazy to steal!!!!!!

Frankly, I've gotten a huge kick out of seeing our "Team USA" basketball team, made up of NBA all stars getting their butts kicked by Eastern European teams consisting entirely of White players.
It's not that I don't have respect for Black basketball players. I just think the NBA has gotten away from fundamentals such as good shooting and team oriented play, in favor of guys who are 6 foot 8 inches who can fly down the court with blazing speed and jump really high, yet have absolutely no instinctive feel for the game.

Not exactly. At elite levels of competition, athletes of West African ancestry utterly dominate the sprints, as well as positions in team sports that emphasize foot speed. But black athletes are not especially dominant in events emphasizing strength, endurance, or technique (with the interesting exception of the Kenyans and Ethopians in the marathon). Raw speed is important in a lot of games, but different sports favor different body types.
There was a black American female figure skater about 20 years ago, her first name was Debbie. I believe she even won American Nationals one year, the skating federation was really pushing her career.
Gumbel is a racist anti-white and envious.
Yes, the black American skater was very athletic, she did amazing flips. And there was a Black French skater, Surya Bonaly, who was similarly athletic, circa ten years ago.
I think he was looking to be notice but he was dismissed.
Gumbel loves to go on bizarre rants, it seems. The last time I saw part of his show (and one of the only times) he closed with a diatribe against NFL players pouring Gatorade on their coaches after wins. I hate it when sportscasters stretch to invent issues.

What's March Madness??
For anyone who didn't read the entirety of Gumbel's monologue, here it is: Please note the final sentence, it is very telling.

Because they’re so trying, maybe over the next three weeks we should all try too. So try not to laugh when someone says these are the world’s greatest athletes, despite a paucity of blacks that makes the winter games look like a GOP convention. So if only to hasten the arrival of the day they’re done, when we can move on to March Madness — for God’s sake, let the games begin."
