The real scandal is spending
Townhall ^ | 2-15-06 | Tim Chapman

Republican Study Committee Chairman Mike Pence today issued a statement about lobbying reform and fiscal sanity. Pence rightly points out that the real problem in Washington, DC is fiscal irresponsibility. Many other problems stem from that one.

From Pence's statement:

"The headlines announcing one scandal after another have grieved the heart of the American people and have eroded public confidence in our national government's commitment to governing of the highest moral caliber.

"The Bible says that 'Righteousness exalts a nation,' so the converse must also be true. So Congress is preparing to fight for ethics reform, not because such scandals hurt our party, but because they do hurt the nation.

"But as we reform our rules of ethics, we will do so with the understanding that these are but symptoms of the core problem.

"The real scandal in Washington D.C. is runaway federal spending. "Fiscal and moral integrity are inseparable issues.

"So it's not enough to change the way lobbyists spend their money, Mr. Speaker. We must change the way Congress spends the people's money.

"Only by marrying budget reform and ethics reform can we hope to restore the confidence of the American people in the fiscal and moral integrity of our national legislature."

Talk, talk, talk. In regard to fiscal responsibility, that's all we have ever gotten from congress and the Presidancy, and that's all we will ever get. Term limits and a tax reform are the only answers.

Once the representative gets elected, it doesn't take long for them to become addicted to the power, money, lack of accountability, and privilege.

The almost free use of our money keeps the American politician in power.

Preach on , brother! There is only one reason I vote (R), and you jerks haven't been living up to the primary core value I associate the party as having - fiscal responsibility.

It is the "conservative caucus".In the past they have simply been a mouthpiece for conservatism but in the end they did whatever leadership wanted.now under the leadership of Mike Pence, they have backed it up with action shifting the whole Republican caucus and the whole debate to the right. They are the reason for the Deficit Reduction Bill that will save the taxpayers 39 billion over 5 years.

Any chance Pence will get plastic surgery on the area around his eyes. Close-up and in person, they appear somewhat beady, which (unfortunately) means that some people will say that he "looks untrustworthy" and could be a campaign negative if he has presidential ambitions.

The problem is some aspects of the current Linder bill resemble to closely with a Value Added Tax.The rebates are going to be a mess.Pence wants to abolish the IRS immediatly but also wants to couple that with around 300 billion in yearly SPENDING CUTS.PENCE WILL sign on to the bill, but there is more work to be done.

No sir.He will not. Thanks for thinking of it though ,considering no one else comes up with that kind of "stuff" it is good to hear your opinion. You have unique opinions that NO ONE ELSE HAS so it always puts an interesting perspective on things. It is always important to know what 0.0000003% of the population is thinking.

..don't know...first I've heard of it. My understanding is that these committees come and go on fairly regular basis...too much for me to keep up with.

Look, just start acting like a legtimate FReeper and not as Mike Pence's PR staffer, and folks may start taking you seriously. As it currently stands, anyone who has encountered your posts or threads more than once will assume that you are on Pence's payroll and have no objectivity in your opinions.

Oh, and by the way, you never answered the question of whether you were actually a delegate to CPAC.

Finally, I still like Pence, possibly for Speaker.

Both are real problems - I doubt he believes it would be wise to cut military spending, but some of the worst pork barrel spending and procurement scandals have involved the Pentagon.

So then I will assume that you are a Pence PR staffer and were not actually at CPAC.

Pardon me for not getting too excited. I'll begin the Lurker Dance Of Joy when there's another zero on the end of the number you stated.

But for now, I'll watch what he's doing with interest. And tahnk you for answering my question. I sincerely hope this isn't another election time gambit by the usual pubbie suspects.

I think Pence needs to spend some time with Linder. If he thinks it's anything at all like a VAT, he's misinformed.

And the prebates are MUCH simpler than the silly mess we have now- infact, they're much simpler than SS payments. If we use electronic cards, like debit cards, it can all be done with zero mail. The technology is already in place, and banks utilize it millions, maybe billions of times every day.

And the spending cuts will take care of themselves once the tax rate becomes a political football and people get sick of paying it every time they buy something.

So like I said, he probably needs to just spend more time with Linder on this. It's a no-brainer.
