NEW YORK (AP) -- A photograph of a pond taken by Edward Steichen sold for more than $2.9 million, easily setting a world record for the highest-priced photograph ever auctioned, Sotheby's said.

"The Pond-Moonlight," taken on Long Island in 1904, sold on Tuesday for $2,928,000, including the buyer's premium, Sotheby's spokesman Matthew Weigman said. The buyer's identity was not immediately disclosed.

The photograph shows a pond in a wooded area with light coming through the trees and reflected in the water. Pre-sale estimates priced the photo, which is slightly bigger than 16 inches by 19 inches, at up to $1 million. The only other two prints are in museum collections.

...

Stephen Perloff, the editor of The Photograph Collector, a newsletter about the photography art market, said before the Steichen auction that it would be a "moment of history."

Scarity of the image may also be a factor.

I've see a million dollar photo before. I think it was by Weston and dated from 1973 but I may be wrong. I think there were 3 prints in existence. If the negative was not destroyed by the artist, then the image CAN still be printed again, just not by the hand of the artist.

Buy what you like.

Of course, but it's what I can afford.

I understand the value of the pic, but I am not a collector or connoiser or art historian, so I don't even go there. I just enjoy looking at his stuff, and am glad it's being bought and preserved.

Gee, I've got a nice old pond picture. I'd better hang onto it. It was taken in the early 1900's and is enlarged. The name and fame are everything, I guess.

He seems to have followed the rule of thirds.

LOL!

You must repost that with the third pic of that crying DUmmie when it was announced there would not be a recount. If you don't have it maybe someone can email it to you. It would be perfect with these two.

It's gotta say something about the internet that I've seen about 3 fake versions of this "bush/abramoff" photo without ever having seen a real one. Or even knowing if there is a real one.

It goes without saying that "looterman" should really start considering a suit for royalties. Does he even know who he is?

Those images bring tears of joy to my eyes.

We came so close to a traitor winning the presidency. His wartime protest group plotted the assassination of congressmen who supported the Vietnam war.

I just sighed in relief.

But seriously, I think the high values are for historical and brand name reasons. I mean these are not Rembrandts or Monets which are unique and unreproducible. By now, thousands of photographers, amateur and professional have taken shots that are as good artistically, and however else you want to measure their quality, as Steichen. Photography does not measure up to painting or sculpture or music. An art gallery opened up near where I live a year or so ago. It had for sale beautiful colour nature photographs, enlarged to as much as 3' by 4'. I think the prices were in the high hundreds, maybe low four figures. It closed after one month.

I wonder if anyone is actually making any money off his picture.

I took this photo at Antietam Battlefield several years ago. Isn't it worth something?
