NYT: CHENEY FACES GRAND JURY INVESTIGATION IF MAN DIES... In Texas, Carlos Valdez, the district attorney in Kleberg County, said a fatality would immediately spur a new report from the local sheriff and, most likely, a grand jury investigation... MORE...
This was an unfortunate accident, and that's all it's going to continue to be, if Whittington dies or not.
Think about it. You're located on 50,000 acres of land, getting in a little hunting. You're amongst friends. There is no malice and certainly only the best of intentions while enjoying the companionship of like minded souls.
Suddenly, an incident occurs that nobody could have forseen. It's a friend you've just shot. Do you get him medical care, send him off to get the best medical treatment that can be provided, then worry and grieve, or do you immediately call AP and hold a press conference?
I'd wager this was more traumatic on Cheney that it was Whittington. He's naturally going to second guess himself, could I have done more to prevent this? Was it my fault?
As far as scandles go, this isn't even on the radar. The aftermath of this incident will be handled by the authorities as it should be. No malice or negligence will be found. It will be chalked up to one of those things that happen in life. It sucks, but sometimes accidents happen even amoungst well meaning friends.
The media representatives need to take some medication, get some rest and relaxation over the next few days, and go back on duty when they're rested up and significantly more sane.
Dean was talking about Cheney resigning. The media and the leftist in this nation are in another feeding frenzy. In several months they'll be saying that it was nothing much more than an unfortunate accident. Well yeah, that's what it was. Some of us are aware of that now. No we don't have an ax to grind. Perhaps members of the media could learn a thing or two from the Pajama Patrol.
Is this just a little strange estimating the amount of pellets in his body? Quite a range.....
"Dr. David Blanchard, the emergency room chief, estimated that Mr. Whittington had more than 5 but "probably less than 150 to 200" pellets lodged in his body."
Just read it online.
I'd say,IMO,that the shot size was #9 ie: #8-.09";#9-.08".
The Doc at the hospital said that there was 200 pcs of shot. With a 28ga shell loaded with 3/4 oz shot, here's the number of shot that would be in each shell:
#8-308; #9-439.
If the Doc's estimate of 200 shot that hit the fellow hunter was good,I'd say, IMO, that the fellow hunter was
fairly close and lucky he didn't lose an eye or worse.
According to a Doc friend of mine #9 shot would pass thru veins to the heart ---- then opps!
NYT wolves are salivating at the prospect of this man's death
Since they probably pulled them out, one by one, with tweezers, yeah. I imagine they kept count.
I'm not an expert on how these tiny pellets can 'migrate' inside the body. I understand the doctors removed it today.
One medical report I heard was that it penetrated the chest wall near the heart and affected the heart muscle.....causing the irregular heartbeat.
We should all be praying for a complete recovery for him.
See post #364 for info on pellet entering a vein.
The problem's the following; when something comes into the heart from a vein, it enters the left side. The left side pumps blood through the lungs, and then back to the heart. To cause a heart attack, it has to get into a coronary artery, on the right side. But the blood vessels through the lungs are so narrow, I don't believe a shotgun pellet could make it through.
I dunno. "...6 to 200 pieces of shot..." That's just seems like a ridiculous estimate. How the heck could it be as low as "6"? Only 6 holes visible?
I know. The news coverage of this whole thing has just been imbecilic. Instead of ranting at the White House Press Secretary, maybe they might get down to Texas and actually report some facts?

Sounds like 6 holes were visible for the lower estimate, and then for the upper estimate it was based on how many pellets the shell contained (or some fraction of the total pellets contained based on a mathematical equation or guestimate involving distance)
The Clymers are at it again! Cheney really hitem where it hurts!
I never said Cheney would be charged. I just said the investigation would focus on whether or not Cheney was negligent. The local authorities apparently said this themselves. And I never defended the NYT. I just answered another poster's question when he or she asked why there would be an investigation if this guy dies.
I agree. All this reporters know It would keep them busy for months.
David Gregory is an ugly pompous fool.
Whom did he know to get his current assignment?
He needs to be b^$&#-slapped.
Actually I was answering someone's question about why there would be an investigation if this guy dies. Last time I checked, accidental deaths are usually investigated by authorities. I agree that the press is making fools out of themselves, but everyone is losing me with this notion that normal legal procedures should be ignored because Cheney is the VP. I am actually a real conservative unlike people like you who go around pretending they are conservatives because they suddenly found themselves and became a republican 16 months ago. Any real conservative will tell you that nobody is above the law in the US. I don't think Cheney did anything wrong. I don't think charges will arise from the investigation. But an investigation is necessary if the man dies because that is the standard legal procedure that would apply to anyone. You should go over to DU so you can be with like-minded people who cannot stand to hear a point of view different from their own.
I agree with your post. I was attempting to explain what the investigation would be focused on. I couldn't conceive of it focusing on the shooting being intentional, so it would have to focus on who caused the accident. I believe involuntary manslaughter is another terminology for negligent homicide, whic is what I suppose they could charge him with. I doubt charges will come out of the incident either. Hopefully the man will be okay. People on here seem to be getting angry with me for pontificating about this hypothetical investigation.
