FReeper Canteen ~ FReeper Canteen Kids Wednesday ~ Proud To Be A Military Brat! ~ 15FEB06
Serving The Best Troops In The World | The Canteen Kids

Posted on 02/14/2006 5:31:20 PM PST by MoJo2001

Hi! I'm The Sailor and MoJo's youngest son. My nickname at home is *Tibby*. You've probably seen my older brother, hotstreak, before. I'm 6 years old and currently in First Grade.

See the big guy pictured above? Do you know him who he is? If you like the NBA, you'll know it's Shaquille O'Neal.

He, hotstreak, and myself are part of a special community. We're proudly known as *military brats*. His father was in the Army while our Dad is in the Navy.

Military brat is an informal term for a child who has one or more parents who serves or served full-time in the military. It implies that such an upbringing is different in important ways from that experienced by those in the community at large, and can be an insult or a compliment, depending on the context. Although brat is usually taken to mean a spoiled child, military brats are usually considered more disciplined than their stateside peers.

Click here for a neat story about him and one of our heroes.

You all might enjoy this poem that we have framed in our house.......

"Every Brat has a Story"

I am a Military Brat
My hometown is nowhere, my friends are everywhere.
I grew up with the knowledge that home is where the heart is
and the family....

Mobility is my way of life.
Some would wonder about roots, yet they are as deep and strong
as the mighty oak. I sink them quickly, absorbing all an area offers
and hopefully, giving enrichment in return.

Travel has taught me to be open.
Shaking hands with the universe, I find brotherhood in all men.
Farewells are never easy.
Yet, even in sorrow comes strength and ability to face tomorrow
with anticipation....if when we leave one place,
I feel that half my world is left behind. I also know that
the other half is waiting to be met.

Friendships are formed in hours and kept for decades.
I will never grow up with someone, but I will mature with many.
Be it inevitable that paths part, there is constant hope
that they will meet again.

Love of country, respect and pride
fill my being when Old Glory passes in review.
When I stand to honor that flag, so also do I stand in honor of all
soldiers, and most especially, to the parents whose life created mine
Because of this, I have shared in the rich heritage of Military life.

I was a brat.

Born in 1963 in Sherman, Texas, and adopted by my parent's, an Air Force Captain and his wife at Perrin AFB. When I was about 2.5, dad got sent to Vietnam, his second combat tour (the first was in the Marines in Korea, but that's another story). We moved to Memphis, Tennessee while he was gone.

On his return, he was sent to the Pentagon, and we lived in Oxon Hill and Georgetown, Maryland.

From there, the AF sent him to Texas A&M for his Masters in Computer Science.

Then on to Colorado Springs, Cheyenne Mountain.

Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, VA was next. That was our shortest tour - six months.

Then to Gunter AFS in lovely Montgomery, AL. That was where dad helped design and implement ARPANet - now known as the Internet - and he swears he never saw Al Gore anywhere on the design team.

After that, we went to Scott AFB, in Illinois. That was a one year assignment. Dad retired - he had a line for full Colonel, but it meant going back to DC, although his boss swore it would be a short term assignment, and his ticket to his first star. He got out so my brother and I could finish school in one place, and retired to Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

I enlisted five years after he got out, and he swore me on to active duty, which was pretty cool.

There's a bad joke about an organ in there - but I'm not going to go there. Quit feeding me straight lines.
