WASHINGTON (CNN) -- About a fifth of Americans think federal agents have listened in on their phone calls, a CNN/USA Today/Gallup Poll released Tuesday suggests.
Twenty-one percent of the 1,000 adults who replied to the survey conducted Thursday through Sunday said it was very likely or somewhat likely their conversations had been wiretapped, while 52 percent said it was not at all likely.(snip)
According to the poll, Americans appear to be split over the legality of the domestic eavesdropping program. About 49 percent of respondents said the president had definitely or probably broken the law by authorizing the wiretaps and 47 percent said he probably or definitely had not. (snip)

I'm revealing my age, but I remember when Ma Bell actually allowed "party lines" on telephones. For you youngsters that was sharing a telephone line, but you had your own number! Provided lots of entertainment seeing you could quietly listen in on Aunt Martha's telephone conversations that sometimes revealed more than her bingo winnings.

Funny...this corresponds to about the same moonbat percentage of the population that has been looking for a way to impeach Bush since the Bush v. Gore decision was handed down on 12/12/2000.

If the population of the U.S. is roughly 300 million, then 20% of that is 60 million.
So if the 20% in this poll are correct and their conversations are being regularly listened to, then we can assume that at least 60 million phone conversations have been listened in on in the past year.
No wonder the government needs SO MANY EMPLOYEES!

That would be far more than 60,000,000 conversations. If each of these 60,000,000 people made only one phone call per day, that would be 21,900,000,000 conversations that the government would have to monitor in a year (60,000,000 additional calls for a leap year). They have neither the desire nor the manpower to do that.

I wish they would answer all those unsolicited calls I get at dinner time. Yes I am listed with the no-call list but evidently lately they arent paying much mind to that.

I know they're listening in, because there's no way they could know what they know about me if they weren't!
To: firebrand
I am 100% certain they are listening to my conversations. For instance: Last night my wife called me and asked that I pick up some milk from the grocery store. Now it could be a coincidence, but when I got there there was a BUNCH of it there. Do you really think it would have been there if they hadn't monitored my phone call?
Yea. Case closed.

sheesh.

A fifth of all Americans think that they're in the top 0.5% in IQ, too!
To: Publius6961
Poll was responded to by Americans who already had a fifth.

About a fifth of Americans think federal agents have listened in on their phone calls... A fifth of Americans have something to hide and/ or have been making calls to Islamic countries where the likelihood is high that they are communicating with Koran worshiping terrorists. I hope the NSA was given a list of those who participated in this survey for followup. If these respondents phone calls haven't been tapped as of yet, perhaps they should be.

But this is a problem, all people hear are the democratic view,Republicans need to demand equal time.
To: Diddle E. Squat
If these same people were even half as concerned about the blatant infringement of our liberties that is the Campaign Finance Reform Act as they are about the Patriot Act, then I'd be a little more sympathetic.
