BOSTON (AP) - The state board that oversees pharmacies voted Tuesday to require Wal-Mart to stock emergency contraception pills at its Massachusetts pharmacies, a spokeswoman at the Department of Public Health said.
The unanimous decision by the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy comes two weeks after three women sued Wal-Mart in state court for failing to carry the so called "morning after" pill in its Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores in the state.
The women argue state policy requires pharmacies to provide all "commonly prescribed medicines."
The board has sent a letter to Wal-Mart lawyers informing them of the decision, said health department spokeswoman Donna Rheaume. Wal-Mart has until Thursday to provide written compliance.
Dan Fogleman, a spokesman for Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart, said the company hadn't heard about the decision, but would comply with any order.

As far as I can see, once he sees a veto will be overridden, he folds and signs (what he formerly said he'd never sign) and says it's better that way. (The way he crumpled on abortion in the debates against Kennedy.) He could still veto and let it be overridden and hold a press conference or something.
Failure doesn't make a wimp; refusing to fight does.
This is why the people who say leave birth control/abortion to the states are wrong. We'll take what we can get, but eventually there must be federal laws enforced consistently nationwide.
So three women want Wal-Mart to carry the morning-after pill in case they let their lust get the better of them and they end up making hot monkey love to nameless studs on hot summer nights without meaning to? Why can't they use Walgreens or Rite-Aid?

Simply put:
Massachusetts politics is controlled by the Democratic party. Our federal legislative delegation consists entirely of Democrats. There are probably as many Republicans in our General Court as there are Red Sox players on the major league active roster (i.e., around 25). Because of this, Governor Romney, a Republican---not a libertarian, as you claim---can't even dream of sustaining a veto. Tom Menino, a Democrat, is more-or-less Boston's mayor-for-life. The Republican depth chart is so weak Kerry Healey is the GOP's next candidate for governor, and it can't find candidates to challenge Ted Kennedy or John Kerry.
And compared to the Massachusetts Libertarian organization, the Massachusetts GOP looks like Tammany Hall. Carla Howell wasn't on anyone's radar screen---she was statistically insignificant in the 2002 race for governor.
So to claim that libertarians significantly influence in Massachusetts politics---as you do---is so beyond the pale it's laughable. It matters not a whit that I no longer participate in retail politics---anyone with a functional, firing synapse in one's brain could figure this out. You posted simply to "bash" libertarians, but your ridiculous attempt revealed more about you than anything to do with reality. Good show, newbie.

Sorry, I was sarcasm-blind when I read that. But it is true - too many women use abortion as birth control for convenience.
That is a reasonable idea. Complications, even infrequent, should be checked by a doctor. It would also be more convenient for the woman involved. No need for a pharmacy trip.
Actually, phacmacies are liscenced by the state and, in this case, the state says the drug must be carried. Best way to change that is to get the state regulations changed.

I know you think only Democrats are in power in your state. This might be shocking to you, but you have a Republican Governor now and before him you had a different Republican Governor. Your state elected a guy named Weld as Governor and then elected a guy named Romney. They are both Republicans. But I can see how you would not know this. They don't talk or act like Republicans - ever.
I feel your pain - I happen to shop there a lot, has what I need, close by, etc. I keep it a secret at work, though, and accidentally let it slip that I got some really nice fabric at Wal Mart. WHOA! I about had my head chopped off and was promptly told that it was their fault my wages weren't higher. (huh????) Oh well, that's what I get for living in Portland.
Yeah, working with college students every now and again practically makes you G. Gordon Liddy. And your continued usage of the epithet "Masshole" is incorrect, too. Masshole, besides being about twenty or twenty-five years out of date, is a put-down for a resident or native of the state, not the state itself. If you're going to slam something, at least do it correctly.

Weld, of course, left office because the Clinton administration wanted him to become Ambassador to Mexico, so we got Cellucci, who left to become Ambassador to Canada, so we got Jane "Sky Pilot" Swift, who, without a doubt, was the worst governor of this state with the sole exception of Mike Dukakis. In order to get anything done, every single one of these "Republicans" had to bend over and take it up the tailpipe from Bulger and Finneran, because Bulger and Finneran, Democrats, were the real state power brokers. I'm surprised you didn't glean that bit of information, given your extensive work in Commonwealth politics. And quite frankly, if you did actually work in GOP politics here, it's no wonder the party is in such dire straits: you morons were, and apparently still are, too busy worrying about the libertarians!Perhaps it's time now for you to admit you mis-wrote "libertarian" for "liberal" in your previous posts . . . or are you honestly this delusional?
