Florida Senate: Republicans Supporting Harris

Survey of 500 Likely Voters

February 6, 2006

Election 2006

Florida Senator

Bill Nelson (D) 49% Katherine Harris (R) 40% RasmussenReports.com

February 14, 2006--In recent weeks, several Republican political leaders in Florida have stopped trying to push Katherine Harris out of the U.S. Senate campaign and decided to support her efforts. Governor Jeb Bush, Lt. Governor Toni Jennings, and members of the state's Congressional delegation have indicated that they will campaign for Harris.

Rank-and-file Republicans have made the adjustment as well. Seventy-seven percent (77%) of GOP voters now plan to vote for Harris in November. That's up from 59% in early January and matches Senator Bill Nelson's support among Democrats.

Overall, however, Harris still trails Nelson by nine percentage points, 49% to 40% (see crosstabs). Among voters not affiliated with either the Republicans or Democrats, Harris trails badly, 64% to 18%.

Forty-four percent (44%) of Florida voters now have a favorable opinion of Harris, up from 34% a month ago. Forty percent (40%) have an unfavorable opinion.

Nelson is viewed favorably by 53% and unfavorably by 27%.

I still say that Katherine Harris is a bad candidate and shouldn't be the nominee. But what's done is done, so there's no point in opposing her.

It turns out that Bill Nelson is also a poor candidate, and he doesn't appear to be holding up well under public exposure. He owes his last election to his opponent's shortcomings, not his own strength. Where I went wrong is in overestimating Nelson's appeal, not underestimating Harris's. It's given Harris an opening. I hope she's able to exploit it, but whether she can remains to be seen.

Harris is showing more strength than expected, but it's still uphill.

Nelson is an incumbent polling at under 50%. If anybody's got a hill, it's him.

Katherine's ratings with independents is troublesome. But then again, it is an off year election. So these independents may not bother to vote.

Yes, and so are her high negatives. But she can make some improvements on both as people actually see/hear her (as opposed to media portrayals). I'm more concerned with this premature declaration of death among her own kind. If we can get past that major sticking point, I think KH will do pretty well.

I can tell anyone who can reach her campaign, if she supports motorcyclists in FL (we ride year round) she will have an instant army of election workers.

She has come across too wishy washy, and too much in the nanny state category.

not a joke.

Nelson has his own machine. He has to in FL. The Democrat Party in FL is useless and near non existent except in a very few select pockets.

Nelson is very formitable and he is not stupid. He runs to the right to CYA.

He did come out for the boy scouts. He will probably support the FL marriage amendment. He has supported motorcyclists.

Harris needs to cut to the right HARD. She needs to get ahead of the curve. She needs to publicly and LOUDLY support the FL and the federal marriage amendments, support the scouts, and come out very strong for LEGAL immigration.

sorry but conservative men prefer their female candidates to look like women, not pants suit wearing lesbians.

Sorry but the "podium shot" is pedestrian and not distiguished.

Quite frankly, the fact she is a horse rider is more significant than how she can imitate a manequen behind a podium.

Just my two cents. (after all, unless she says something really stupid I will end up voting for her. ie we don't need another martinez weak brain.)

Have you ever seen & heard KH campaigning? I have & she's awesome.

She stand with her volunteers on the street corners of Sarasota; she autographs our tee shirts with 'Thank you'....she walks door to door to campaign!

She has a chrisma and charm that will surprise Floridians when they get to meet her in person!

She has a very quick mind & is a very good debater. I truly believe that she can win. Remember how steadfast and courageous she was in 2000? That is the real KH and she will work very hard to win.....let's all get behind her as we did in 2000!

Please look at this video:

Why aren't they running a man? Why are they surrendering the seat to Sir Nelson for life?

Not with the last name of Bush!

Jeb's problem is that his father and brother were/are presidents. The old "DYNASTY" term works against hi,; with even many GOPers against his ever becoming president. And then, there ARE the family skeletones ( wife's and daughter's ) that don't help him any.

Did I really send you that photo? I don't recall doing that....there are so many copies of it on FR.

I do not post it because I agree with Minute Gal.....it's become boring.....to have it on every thread that mentions KH!

I also like her book cover and the one you posted.

Ya know Julie, the thing that really gets next to me is the candy-ass RINOs that seem to thingk a candidate we love is doomed because the Deaniacs despise him/her. They're the Peter Arnetts of our party.

Harris '06!
