Florida Senate: Republicans Supporting Harris

Survey of 500 Likely Voters

February 6, 2006

Election 2006

Florida Senator

Bill Nelson (D) 49% Katherine Harris (R) 40% RasmussenReports.com

February 14, 2006--In recent weeks, several Republican political leaders in Florida have stopped trying to push Katherine Harris out of the U.S. Senate campaign and decided to support her efforts. Governor Jeb Bush, Lt. Governor Toni Jennings, and members of the state's Congressional delegation have indicated that they will campaign for Harris.

Rank-and-file Republicans have made the adjustment as well. Seventy-seven percent (77%) of GOP voters now plan to vote for Harris in November. That's up from 59% in early January and matches Senator Bill Nelson's support among Democrats.

Overall, however, Harris still trails Nelson by nine percentage points, 49% to 40% (see crosstabs). Among voters not affiliated with either the Republicans or Democrats, Harris trails badly, 64% to 18%.

Forty-four percent (44%) of Florida voters now have a favorable opinion of Harris, up from 34% a month ago. Forty percent (40%) have an unfavorable opinion.

Nelson is viewed favorably by 53% and unfavorably by 27%.

I don't blame him for not recognizing FreeRepublic.

As influential as this website has been, it's still not a brand name in the same way that the Drudge Report is.

Then again, that probably has something to do with Drudge's endless self-promotion.

:-)

I don't know where you got the idea that McCollum is some kind of mushy moderate.

He was a staunch conservative on almost every major issue-from life and death issues, to the subject of rolling back racial preferences, to criminal justice, to the investigation of Bill Clinton's malfeasance while in office-and from what I recall, earned a life-time rating from the ACU that hovers around ninety percent.

He is certainly much better than the turncoat, faux-conservative Mel Martinez.

Bleh!

Anyway, it does sound like a very anemic campaign on his part, almost as bad as the Rick Lazio effort to defeat Her Shrillness, which I am intimately familiar with.

You're correct that wording of questions can impact poll results greatly, as can the manipulation of demographics (% of Dems vs. Pubbies). You're incorrect saying that a scientifically conducted poll of 500 people cannot be an accurate representation of a larger population.

Yeah, I actually got to see that campaign in person. Admittedly having only seen a little bit, Lazio's organization (or lack thereof) just didn't impress me.

I never said Bill was a mushy moderate (see my post above). He was just a mushy candidate.

That's why I love the gung-ho attitude of Katherine Harris. I think she's going to come flashing out of the box like the American skiers I'm watching tonight....and she'll handle the twist and turns of the course with determination and aplomb till she crosses the finish line.

It was so inept that it defies description.

I worked on it-off and on-for the duration of the campaign.

I couldn't believe that volunteers-such as myself-seemed to be more skilled than his paid staff.

Whenever that happens you know you've got a problem.

I already tried explaining that to you. Perhaps this link will do a better job.

Sampling is the fundamental method of inferring information about an entire population without going to the trouble or expense of measuring every member of the population. Developing the proper sampling technique can greatly affect the accuracy of your results.

Other Florida news. Tom Gallagher has put a good policy team together.

A Tom Gallagher for Fla Governor Press Release. Unveiling his health care plan and check it out. US Congressman Dr. Dave Weldon is on his policy team.

GALLAGHER ANNOUNCES HEALTHCARE POLICY TEAM

TALLAHASSEE – Florida Chief Financial Officer and candidate for the Republican nomination for Governor Tom Gallagher today announced the fourteen Floridians who will make up his Healthcare Policy Team. The team includes two past-presidents of the Florida Medical Association and is comprised of influential Floridians who posses healthcare knowledge and expertise. The team will advise Treasurer Gallagher and assist in formulating his vision into a comprehensive healthcare plan. This is the sixth major policy team formed by Gallagher since announcing his candidacy last year.

“The next Governor of Florida must be prepared to address Florida’s healthcare challenges,” said CFO Tom Gallagher. “Florida has a responsibility to ensure the availability, affordability and quality of health care for our children, our poor and our seniors, and my plan will see to it that we fulfill those commitments.”

Gallagher continued, “We must confront the rising cost of care for families and small-businesses, we must make Florida a more attractive place for doctors and nurses to work and live, and we must seek new ways to keep health insurance available and affordable.”

“Throughout his career, Tom Gallagher has been a champion of the most vulnerable in our state and the healthcare professionals who dedicate their lives to our well-being,” said former Speaker of the House John Trasher, who also served as General Counsel to the Florida Medical Association. “Tom understands the importance of effective, affordable and available healthcare in Florida, and he is the only candidate in this race with the record and the vision to fight for Florida’s patients and doctors.”

Tom Gallagher has a record of innovation which has provided Floridians with additional healthcare options in the past. In fact, during his time as Insurance Commissioner, Gallagher founded the Healthy Kids Corporation. Healthy Kids is an “Innovations in Government Award” winner that provides healthcare for school children in Florida. The program’s success continues to inspire similar programs in other states, as well as at the federal level and Tom Gallagher still serves as the Chairman of the Healthy Kids Board.

In addition, Tom Gallagher is the only candidate for Governor with a clear and consistent record of leadership regarding medical liability reform. He was the only candidate to stand with Governor Jeb Bush in support of Amendment 3, and he is the only candidate who has announced a comprehensive tort reform plan which includes further changes to discourage baseless medial liability lawsuits.

Gallagher has already announced major policy proposals regarding the Family, Public Safety, Insurance Reform and Tort Reform.
