Conservatives Predict Allen Will Face Clinton in 2008

The 2008 presidential election will pit Republican Sen. George Allen of Virginia against Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York, according to a straw poll conducted among conservatives over the weekend.

The straw poll was conducted at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Washington, D.C.

Sixty-four percent of those surveyed predicted that Clinton will win her party's nomination in 2008. Twenty-two percent thought Allen will win the GOP nomination. The poll asked participants which candidate they believe will win, not necessarily the candidate they hope will win.

Clinton led other Democratic hopefuls by a wide margin. The runner-up was former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner, who received 10 percent of the vote. Seven percent of respondents expect one-time vice presidential candidate and former U.S. Sen. John Edward from North Carolina to get the nomination.

Other potential Democratic hopefuls, including New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson and 2004 presidential hopeful Wesley Clark, received less than 5 percent of the vote.

Republican candidates were much closer in the poll. U.S. Sen. John McCain from Arizona received 20 percent of the vote. Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who won last year's straw poll, received 12 percent of the vote. Ten percent of respondents expect Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to win the nomination.

The group Americans for Dr. Rice, which is urging Rice to run for president in 2008, maintained a prominent position at the CPAC conference exhibit hall. Members of the group passed out buttons, stickers, and t-shirts promoting her candidacy. Rice has repeatedly said she is not interested in running for president.

The poll surveyed more than 1,200 conference attendees. Eighty-one percent of the respondents were between 18 and 25-years old. Fifty-eight percent were male.

The poll also asked conference attendees whether they approved of President Bush's performance on a variety of issues. He had the most support, a 92 percent approval rating, for nominating conservative judges. More than 90 percent approved of his handling of the war on terrorism.

Fewer than half of the respondents, only 43 percent, approved of Bush's efforts to reduce government spending. Forty-eight percent approved of his approach to illegal immigration.

If Allen's the best we have, I'm not impressed. Hopefully Cheney will rethink and run.

A W or B works equally well in describing the hag.

I'm not counting Frist out just yet but know it's difficult to elect a senator president.

I'd vote for Donald Duck if it meant keeping her out.

During the campaign you'll notice that Rudy Guiliani will be the only guy with a set of testicles.

McCain will be drooling the corner.

McCain -vs- Shrillary

A truly horrifying prospect. I'd have to pull the R lever... with a plugged nose and watery eyes.

(And then go drool in the corner!)

That's why MOST conservatives will vote for Rudy or McCainiac, because the alternative is too awful to fathom.

Well they don't seem to be running, but then it's early and any one of them might run.

I could never vote for McCain or Rudy or Allen so I guess I'm still waiting for the field to narrow.

Allen could never beat Hillary in a race. He's not a strong enough candidate. If that is what we are going to put up for our candidate then we are in for a big loss.

I'm thinking he'll step in and run, myself. Jeb/Condi will be tough for the Rudy/Newt ticket to overcome. LOL

Wrong, and wrong! Neither will head their respective tickets. Try again.

Yep, still early. When GWB announced he was running, it scared off alot of wannabees. There is no one with that stature now.

for the life of me can't see what the hype is about Allen.

Guiliani at least has some nuts. Allen is a typical whiteboy panzie with no street cred. I want to see scrapper up there for a change.
