LAHORE, Pakistan Feb 13, 2006 (AP) Gunmen on a motorcycle Monday killed a Pakistani doctor who spent six months in jail on suspicions of harboring al-Qaida suspects and possessing illegal weapons.
Some in this eastern city blamed the United States for the shooting of Ahmad Javed Khawaja, who had spent much of his life in the United States.
A protest of about 500 people erupted shortly after the killing, with many shouting "Death to America!" as they blocked a street and set tires on fire.
Khawaja, 72, was attacked while walking to his clinic after morning prayers at a mosque, said Mohammed Ali, a Lahore police official.
The attackers fled and no one has been arrested, Ali said, adding that the motive was not known.
In December 2002, Khawaja and several members of his family were detained by intelligence agents in Lahore and charged with harboring al-Qaida suspects. Khawaja said he was questioned by American agents.
A court dismissed the charges in April 200, saying the prosecution had failed to provide evidence of his links with the terror network.
The doctor and his Canadian brother were also accused of lesser charges of possessing illegal weapons and resisting arrest. They were acquitted of those charges and released in June 2003.
Afterward, Khawaja accused Americans of wanting to destroy Muslims.
Khawaja, a gastroenterologist, has said he spent 15 years in the United States. Two sons detained with him were both American nationals.
At the time of his death, Khawaja was running a clinic for poor people and had helped out in Pakistani Kashmir after the devastating earthquake there, his brother Khawaja Tanveer Ahmed said.
"We have no idea who could be involved in this (shooting)," he said. "We cannot understand that someone could go to this extent in his enmity with him."
Guys on motorcycles. Hmmmm.
(Toecutter's gang?)
Old charges:
"Khawaja had visited Afghanistan when the Taliban were in power and treated al-Qaida members. He had also sheltered two wives of a leading member of al-Qaida and their 10 children in his house."
"the family had been in contact with several senior al-Qaida men, including Abu Yasir al-Jaziri, an Algerian or Moroccan involved in its business operations, and Abu Faraj, described as the head of al-Qaida's north African network and a deputy to Khalid Sheikh Mohammed."
"The family also had contact with Sheikh Said al-Misri, described as an Egyptian responsible for al-Qaida finances.
The police found Sudanese, Egyptian and Afghan passports in the house"
Defense:
"Dr Khawaja's family admitted that he had travelled to Afghanistan during the 1980s war against the USSR but denied that he had been there since."

I hope so. If we had a national-security establishment worthy of the name, the Nile would be choked with the carcasses of dead extremist imams.
Intriguing.
Could someone have thought he wasn't who he made himself out to be?
America right now is openly involved in terrorism, Ahmad Javed Khawaja told reporters in the eastern city of Lahore. What the US is doing right now is not different from terrorism. Everybody can see and feel it.
They actually want to destroy the power and money of the Muslims. They want to use it for their own interest, he said.
Sure, happens all the time in gangland, USA.
I hope it is our guys...
Terrorize the terrorist...
No sanctuary...
Whack em and stack em....

Yep, sounds like it might have been a good kill....
It would be nice to hear we have "teams" finally on the kill, keeping these sheetheads awake at night.....

Good!

Someone in al-Qaida may have thought he gave up too much while in custody?
I guess it could be that he was taken out by our special ops?
We may never know.
You think he might really have been a "good guy", whacked by the AQ?
With a history like that?
Or did I misunderstand your point?
Semper Fi
I don't think we know.
What if he was 'turned' while in custody and aQ found out about it?
I guess anything is possible in Pakistan....
The charges against America, could have been "cover"...
However -- a man trusted by a high ranking AQ leader to shelter his wives and children -- in in TIGHT.
I doubt we've been successful very often, in "turning" many of these long toothed Islamists....

"That there is Kundalini. And Kundalini wants his hand back! (chop!)
I think if it was those Evil Americans, Doctor Al Q. would have instead received a Hellfire launched from a UAV, courtesy of the CIA.
Khawaja, 72
hmmmm hard to turn someone at that age.
Their thinking will not change.
"Turning" was probably the wrong word for what I was thinking. Maybe too much information had been extracted from him to suit the aQ?
